Word, McCullough and Fay made up a mini national with their push and shove battle for third, which saw Word pass an outof-shape McCullough for third behind Hurst and Campbell. An excellent all-out bash between Barkman and Yamamoto kept the 3,500 spectators on their feet next, as Yamamoto kamakazied down the hill, swopping up Barkman for seventh place. · Another battle was forming for fourth between McCullough and Fay, after Word motored away from the duo to keep third all to himself. Fay, riding with a broken wrist, had a Mile National the following night to think about and rode consistently, followed by Dodge and Barkman, who mastered his duel with Yamamoto in the later stages. Hurst took his second Regional win of the year, Campbell second, Word third, and Fay took McCullough for fourth, coming across the line in a spectacular move; McCullough finished fifth. e Results EX MAIN: 1. Dowers' beautiful ride was aided by the lap five crash of Utah's top rider, Kris Morgan, who led most of the race . A total of 165 riders from 10 states showed up to make this the biggest cross-country race held in Idaho since 1976. Many-months of planning by the promoting club, Dirt, Inc., really showed as the riders were treated to nice scenery, T-shirts, decals, a genuine dirt-bike parade through town and barbecue on Saturday night. Following the barbecue, the 1982 Idaho Desert Racing awards were given and then the 1971 Yamaha movie "Epic" was shown in the park. As dusk fell Saturday night, rumors of local resident Bob Hannah appearing were squashed as he flew off to Colorado for a hunting trip; oh well, maybe next year. Early Sunday morning, the pit area began ' to overflow. This event was well advertised and riders had shown up from as far away as Seattle, Denver, and Santa Barbara. ' Riders were staged 10 per row and were to start at 15 second intervals. After a long riders' meeting, and staging, the first line-roared off over the hill. Immediately, the main problem of the day became apparent: dust. Despite the visibility, several fast riders began 'th eir charge through the pack: The leading pack consisted, of course, of the group of very fastriders who drew a front-row start. Bill Dowers, Kris Morgan (430 Hus), Bob Nancolas, (125 Yam) and Mike Kelly (125 Suz) began a terrific battle which lasted throughout the first 25 mile lap. . The scenic and interesting terrain really scattered out the field .soon after the start. About four miles from the start lurked a "small mudhole" which claimed numerous victims including Kris Morgan, who scrambled out after losing a couple of minutes. Another 10 miles of sagebrush, and then the course dropped into the deep pine woods. Morgan loved this 'and he quickly regained the lead and built it up to several minutes by the end of the first lap. As the race progressed, lots of riders began to drop out. The mudhole was doing its thing and getting-worse by the minute. Many of the small bikes were seizing while climbing the two winding roads which went clear up to 8,500 feet. Dan Lees (125 Hon) inherited the top small-bore spot, when both Bob Nancolas and Mike Kelly retired with blown motors. As is his style, Bill Dowers stayed cool, calm, and smooth as the race progressed; leader Kris Morgan was riding both brilliant and erratic. Kris is still recovering from a bad crash at Cherry Creek in May, and besides nursing a still-bad shoulder, his riding was a little rusty. On the fourth . lap, Kris locked bars with a lapped rider and went down hard, damaging a wheel. Just as h got restarted, Dowers roared by and into the lead. As the duo started the fifth and final lap, Morgan was only about ioo yards behind and closing, but again he collided with a lapped rider, further . injuring his bad shoulder. Rather than risk more damage, Morgan elected to ride back to the pits' and Dowers disappeared, holding an II minute lead to the end: Secondover. all went to Terry Krehbiel (495KTM), who moved up beautifully from a , row 13 start; Utah 's Mark Jones (430 Hus) finished third. . • Results OVERALL: 1. Ulibarri breezes to twin wins at Suntana, By Eric Bates SPRINGVILLE,UT, AUG. 27 Swift Salt Laker Kenny Ulibarri disposed of all ' Expert competition with four wins in four races to top 125 and 250cc racingatSuntana. Roger Braithwaite; on the mend after a knee injury earlier this year, furnished Ulibarri with a little competition in the 125s but ', could do no better than to stay five seconds back most of the time. Mickey Kirk finished third. Ulibarri swapped leads with Arlun Ault in 250cc action once, but Ault spun out and left Ulibarri flying alone in the lead in the first moto. Ault closed on Ulibarri in the second moto, but fell and left second to a smoking ride by Jeff Barnes. Barnes kept pressure on Ulibarri, but the leader continued a cool, ' controlled ride to finish on top. Ault got back up and worked fiercely back to third. Barnes and Ault finished 2-3. Jay Neve whipped a serious group of 125cc Amateurs. Craig Wayman took the lead in the first moto, but fell. "I got a big break when he fell, got Iucky and then it was all looking over my shoulder," said Neve. Neve rode a perfect second race, leading from start to finish to top Brett Wilson and Gregg Greenhalgh out of a field of cagy Amateurs all capable of winning. Mark Younkin's pair of seconds was good enough to top the 250cc Amateurs as single moto winners Bob Wilson and Lynn Hiatt could do no better than fourth in their other moto for second and third overall. Johnny Ross celebrated his recovery from a neck injury at Price a few weeks ago with a stunning ride in the 80cc Amateur second moto. Ross fell, dropped to last, then picked off the entire rack one at a time to garner a pair 0 wins. Brook Beckstrom took second ahead of Jason Gatley. Troy Lerwill dove under the leaders in the banked second turn in both motos then ran away 'to play in the lead in 80cc Expert racing, looking bored with the lack of anyone to race against. Perhaps he could start backwards and with a dead engine to inject a little suspense into this class. Zach Tittenson hid from his peers in the 80cc Novice ll-year-old division and picked up a pair of wins. Gregg Jasperson won two to top the 250cc Novices and Gaven Dillard did the same to the Open Experts. Andy Ottesen survived the 125cc Novice battle, Iallmg in the first race, but getting up to finish third, then winning the last moto for first overall. Mike Tasker and Rick .Hill finished 2-3. Whitley, doubles 'dominate at Swan MX By Gary Willer TYLER, TX, AUG. 22 On a day in which virtually every class was won on a double, one rider in particular stood out from the others. Kawasaki pilot Billy Whitley walked away with a hat trick, taking wins in 80cc Senior, Open Mini, and then teaming with Glen North, grabbing the Buddy Race honors as well. Whitley, with a tremendous dis- . play of sportsmanship, woke up the crowd by waiting at the gate at the start of both second, motos as the other racers ran off after the holeshot. Whitley watched through turns one, two and three before deciding it was time to give chase. Starting some 10 seconds late, the young MXer let it all hang out, working his way past slower riders. Halfway into the first lap of both races, Whitley was closing on the leaders. Once Whitley got the lead, he blew their boots off and finished well ahead of the rest of the field. "Steady Eddie" Craft, true to his name, stuck his Kawasaki across the line for both seconds behind Whitley. Tommy Hall (Kaw) was third in each rnoto. Monty Bland (Kaw) was in command of the 125cc Intermediate class, going wire to wire in both motos for the win. There was a feeling of deja vu at the end of the second moto a's the first five riders repeated the first moto order to finish. Another dominant double was pulled off by Mitch Hulsey · on a Honda. He led every lap of the Open Novice and Over 30 class for a perfect score. In the 250cc Novice class, another Honda held the lead on every lap; this one belonging to Jerry Burford. Paul York on a Yamaha mount went I-I in the 250cc and Open Intermediate class to record a double. In the 60cc Micro Minis, Yamaha rider Chucky Hall was double trouble for the rest of the class both times out for the overall win. • Results MICOR MINI : 1. Chucky Hall (Yam); 2.
