Bransford, Bast best Costa Mesa battles By Gary Hoffman COST A MESA, CA, AUG. 27 T here was a fu ll house at the Costa Mesa Fairgrou nds on th is eve of the World Cha m p io n sh ip. People fro m all over th e world witnessed for the firs t tim e the tigh t, radical racing on the small track that brought our World Champion and many o ther American riders' world fam e. One of the treats ton ight was Bo bby Schwartz in a close-one over Bad Brad Oxley in the feature Ma tch race. Third Divis ion lived up to everyth ing the Eu ro peans had been told, though Jimmy O 'Dell act ually won the T hi rd Division main twice. Yes twice. After going around en o ugh times, the race was red-flagged, la ps miscounted and run again. Even red flags 'co uld n ' t slow Jimmy do wn as he won both races easil y. T he Second Division main was only run once, which fra nkly was ,enough. After everyo ne exchanged positions a do zen tim es, Scott Talkin gton came through to take th e trop hy, followed by Denny Scopellite and Chris Mistretta . The Handicap main even t was led from the sta rt by Dennis Bran sford with Steve Lucero , Jim La wson and Oxley close behind, but this was a no-passing race and the order stayed the same right th ro ugh the checkered. The evening climaxed with the Scratch main. Mike Bast grabbed the lead from his pole position, with Alan Christian rig h t behind. Suddenly, John Cook slipped in front of Alan. Bast mo ved his lea d up a couple of bikelengths, while Cook taunted Christian by wa ving for him to catch up. Bast, as usual, rod e the epitomy of what a perfect race looks like, while Cook, win or lose, is always enjoyable to wat ch . Cook took second and Christian finished a fast th ird.
