LaPorte wins World Championship VIMMERBY, SWEDEN, AUG . 29 Yamaha's Danny laPorte gave America its second MX GP title of the year when he used a 4-2 tally to lock up the World Championship 250cc MX Series title at the final round in Sweden. laPorte maintained a points cushion over challenger Georges Jobe (Suz) throughout the day and ended the season with 238 points to Jobe's 225; Racing was dominated by Donnie Hansen (Hon), who won both motos. Hansen used the Swedish GP as a warm-up for the Trophee and Motocross des Nations team races in Europe which start next weekend. Jobe was second in moto one, followed by Kees van der Ven (KTM) and laPorte, which gave laPorte a 13 point lead over Jobe going into the second moto. . In moto two, laPorte was runner-up to Hansen with Jobe third . Van der Ven DNF, but retained third in the final standings with 205. Mike Guerra (Hus) DNF both motos but took seventh in the final standings. Complete coverage next week. "I'm giving up racing to become an actor, and I'm going to put the same amount of effort into acting that I put into racing," explained newlycrowned two-time World Speedway Champion Bruce PenhalI. "I know it's going to mean seven days a week of working and studying." When a reporter jokingly asked if Penhall considered himself a "third division" actor, Penhall jokingly replied, "No. Sixth division." World Class, Inc., promoters of the World Speedway Final , dedicated the event to the memory of late speedway racer Denny Pyeatt. We commend them for that. Didier De Radriguez win the 350cc class by 30 seconds over Anton Mang(Kaw). Mang leads the point standings over De Radriguez by f ive , 69-64. Carlos Lavado won the 250cc event and Eugenio lazzarini won the 125cc race. No 5005 ran in Czecho; their next appearance is in Italy on Sept . 5 for the San Marino GP. "We finally won a race!" chuckled Team Hammer's J ohn Ulrich in a Monday morn ing p ho ne call. Ulrich and co-rider Boonie Knott won a sixhour endurance race a t Blackhawk Farms. IL. The race was part of the WERA Endurance Championship Series. It was truly a weekend for Americans in compe tition around the world. Mike Bell, the defending champion in a stadium motocross in Amsterdam, returned there Aug. 28 and won again. Bell defeated fellow Yamaha rider Hakan Carlqvist and Honda's Jim G ibson to take the win. Carlqvist reportedly will be handed a two-month suspension by the Swedish motorcycle federation for throwing a Swedish national race to help a teammate. So Carla looks doubtful for the Trophee and Motocross des Nations events in early September. Another no-show for the Trophee and MX des Nations events will be newly-crowned 125cc World MX Champ Eric Geboers. The Belgian rider crashed while practicing and broke several toes. Brad Hurst topped .J eff Campbell for Expert honors at the final Northwest AMA Regional TT at the Sidewinders club grounds in Clackamas, OR. Scott Milleredged Randy Green by half a bikelength for the Junior win. Dan Bennett again emerged the winner in Novice action. England-based John Cook topped five other riders in the main event of the 1982Summer Long Track Championship at Ascot Park in Gardena, CA. Bobby Schwartz and Dave DeTemple were the runners-up. HosPITal STOP: Jim Pilon was struck by a car with California plates while competing in the California Racing Club's Gringo enduro in Rosarito Beach in Mexico. Bernie Schreiber (SWM) picked up a pair of wins in .the AMAINATC National Championship Observed Trials Series Aug. 28-29 doubleheader. Schreiber's first win came in the West Greenwich. RI. round where he lost 21.8 ' marks to defeat Curt Comer (Mon) at 31 and Jack Stites (Fan) at 34. The series then moved to Wrentham, MA, where Stites was runner-up to Schreiber's 20.6 mark score with a loss of 36. He and mechanic Brian Lunnis were testing in what they mistoo k for an open area. Wh en the cops surrounded Mr. Brian and the hel icopter tracked down Don n ie, they found out o therw ise. When the who le mess was sorted out a few hours la ter and the two were released (wi th a fine), Donni e rela ted the experience and said. "I don ' t care how good a rid er anybod y is, there's just no way to outrun a hel icopter. I didn' t even try." The Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speedway, in Lawrenceburg, OH, will be the unlikely site of Ameri'can Team Speedway. It seems that Pepsi has put up purse money for a team challenge. Denver's Rocky Mountain Oysters will face n,e Lawrenceburg Levee on September 10th. That will ·be in lawrenceburg near the Ohio river. California Continental Motosport Club will have a Championship Series which will run for four rounds in the last part of September and most of October. The Series will be much like a Fall Golden Stile Series with Sportsman on Saturadays and the Pros on Sunday. Also aping the GSS will be a high level of factory participation with riders from at least Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki appearring. There will be a $3,000 purse at each round and four 125ccmotocrossers, one from each manufacturer, will be presented to various series overall winners in the sportsman classes. Rounds one and five will be run at Saddleback Park on Sept. 25-26 and Oct. 23-24. Round two will be at the Hollister Hills OHV facility on Oct. 2-3. Round three will run at Huron Cycle Park on the Oct. 9-10 weekend and round four will be at Sand Hill Ranch on the Oct. ~1 6- 1 7 weekend.
