(Left) Jim Gunderson (43), Dennis McElwain (9 5 ) and Art Rose Whoop-de-doo at Mayer. Amateurs tough in Mayers heat By Pam Hardin MAYER, AZ, AUG. 22 . Amateurs Dave Fouquette, on a 125ccSuzuki, and Craig Stain, in the 250s, both rode to a 3-1 finish to take home their respec- " tive overall wins at Mayer. In the first moto of the 125cc Amateurs, Art Rose pulled all the power he had from his Suzuki and came out ahead of the rest with Dennis "Little Mac" McElwain pursuing Fouquette in second. By the third lap, "Little Mac" had eased off the second place rider and Jim Gunderson played catch-up after a bad start. Mid-way through, Fouquette made a crucial mistake that had him eating Mac's dust all the way to the finish, while Rose cruised in for the win. In the second rnoto, Fouquette jammed into the lead with Gunderson and Little Mac bringing up the rear. By the third lap, Mac ate some of Mayer's finest real estate, and Rose jammed by for a third place finish. In the 250s first moto, Mike Hoffman stayed on the throttle longer and harder to get to the first tum and grab the lead. Craig Goodnuff and Danny Hodges jammed in behind, and the three riders pulled " away from the pack. Bymid-way, Goodnuffhaddropped " down to fourth and then fifth with overall winner, Stain , fin ishing third. Hoffman (Suz) cruised into the pits with the first moto win under his belt. 30 When moto two rolled around, Charles Tate had eaten enough dust and evened the score when he roosted into first . Tate had Stain to contend with; he had already put away a number of riders after his mid-pack start, and he was hungry for "the win. Tate was going to make him work for it, and " work he did. Stain watched his evey move, like a fox waiting for an open door to the hen house. The door was finall y left open, and Stain j umped on the catch to take the ch eckered first . Results Y ZINGERS: 1. DaHon humbles Canyon Experts By Pam Hardin PHOENIX, AZ, AUG. 21 Bill "The Bullet" Dalton shot to a 1:1 finish in the PhoenixTucson Challenge series held at Deer Valley Cycle Park and Sauguaro Raceway. ' In only his sixth race on a 125, he shocked the other more experienced rider s with his tactful holes ho ts and consistent rides in both mo tos. The first moto action saw Dalton get plenty of competition from Rick Nagle and Jay Perkins, but the Honda rider had the edge because the battle between the two riders let him acquire an outstanding lead, eight seconds by the fourth lap. Bobby White jammed from a mediocre start to join in on the battle for second . By the fifth lap, Dalton pulled away from all the madness, missing a perfect pass by Perkins. The Yamaha rider made his move on the top of the uphill. That move shook up Nagle enough to let White slip by also. Perkins had the power to hold off the Fox Distributing rider, but not enough to catch Dalton, and the positions remained the same to the finish. Second moto action saw the racers closer than before with Dalton and Perkins running away from the pack and a Husky rider in th ird who was riding feverishly to catch them both. And catch them he did, John Imbriale jammed by Perkins on the sweeper " tum, but the time he wasted in that waiting game left him five seconds behind Dalton. He nailed the throttle with all his 250cc power and made it a race to the finish . " Dalton was the only one in the top five of the sweepstakes race to ride a 125, but by taking every advantage he cou ld get, he managed to stay ahead. " I was riding as hard as I could and they were still gaining," he said, "I got a little nervous when Imbriale started to ride my back tire. " Results . PEE WEE NOV: 1. Wesley Adk ins (Yam). Adair is just one of the many riders who is starting out at this track and working his way up. Years ago, Bobby Klin e raced 'on th is Mini track and now he is on e of the top 125cc Pro riders at the Dunes. Adair took his Suzuki to a fine lead in the first moto action and led Mike .Bottom and John Reulein. The second moto was completely different, and it was questionable whether or not Adair would be able to take the win. John Reulein had his Kawasaki out fron t and didn 't want to let go of the leadf Reulein made a mistake on a sweeper and slid out. That was all that Adair needed to take over first place and he did. Bottom was then second and Tim Sassen third. Reulein was forced to DNF for this moto, but even if he had won the moto, Adair would still have had a better overall tally. Two firsts earned Adair the tallest brass over Bottom. Rob Sassen does well at most tracks , but this is where he takes a sure win. Sassen often takes off behind the rest of the pack and has fun catching up to them. Sassen won " first moto of the the 80cc Stock ] unior 12and over race ahead of Glenn Gordy and Troy Cline. In the final moto, Matt Harrison had the lead till Sassen caught up and "passed him on a jump by th~ announcer tower. At that time, Glenn Gordy bailed off his Kawasaki and DNF. Two firsts earned Sassen another trophy ahead of Harrison. Glenn Gordy DNF in the 80cc ModifiedJunior 12and over race and made the winning easy for Sassen. The other double winner for tlie night was Eddie Gaumond from Chula Vista, one long haul from the Dunes. Eddie won both the 60ct Stock and Modified Junior 9-11 race : He was also the big winner of the 60cc Novice race at the Coliseum last month.
