FIRST LOOK I 2022 KTM 250 & 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION
The 2022 Factory Editions have been in the
works for quite some time. The 450 was first
tested by Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin in
2019 and has been in development ever since.
Highlights include a new motor that is tilted two
degrees backwards to improve mass centraliza-
tion. Tilting the engine also lowers the counter-
shaft sprocket 3mm in the chassis and this helps
combat rear suspension squatting under hard
acceleration. The 450's SOHC cylinder head is
redesigned to be more compact, as well.
The 450 is now fitted with a Quick Shift func-
tion that can be activated or deactivated via an
updated map switch on the handlebar. When acti-
vated, the ignition is interrupted for a fraction of a
second to allow upshifting without the use of the
clutch lever while the throttle is fully opened. A
sensor on the shift drum notices the force on the
shift lever, sends the signal to the ECU and the
ignition timing is interrupted. To prevent unintend-
ed shifts and false neutrals, the function is only
active from second to fifth gear.
The hydro-formed chromium molybdenum
frame is all new with emphasis on improving the
way energy transfers through the frame, thus in-
creasing rider comfort. One of the ways KTM did
this was by redesigning how the upper shock is
mounted to the frame. Geometry is unchanged.
Suspension features updated WP Xact 48mm
forks and shock, which is now lighter and shorter
in overall length while retaining the same amount
of wheel travel.
The 250 received many of the same changes
as the 450, including tilting its DOHC motor, which
has been tuned for more midrange power. The
250 received many updates specific to that bike.
Only 400 units of each model will be offered
and only in the U.S.
