50 Years Ago NOVEMBER 23, 1971 40 Years Ago NOVEMBER 18, 1981 P110 LOOKING BACK Danny "Magoo" Chandler was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. We interviewed the popular motocrosser from Northern California... Husqvarna-mounted Scot Harden and Brent Wallingsford teamed up and won the Baja 1000... The 11th round of the AMA National Championship Enduro Series was held in Red Mountain, California, where eastern woods specialist Terry Cunningham emerged as the overall winner in the desert... We showed our readers some of the latest street-bike models from BMW. A photo of Bengt Aberg about to eat dirt at the St. Peters Trans-AMA was pictured on the cover 50 years ago. Aberg walked away but was nursing a broken collarbone... We also had coverage of the Trans-AMA round from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Roger DeCoster ran away from the pack, which included Joel Robert, Sylvain Geboers, and Adolf Weil... The Honda Hawk streamliner was again thwarted in its attempt to surpass the 300- mph barrier at Bonneville... Bob Grossi, Jim Wilson and Preston Petty were some of the stars at the Hopetown Grand Prix. Brent Wallingsford won the Baja 1000 40 years ago with the help of teammate Scot Harden. Colin Edwards dominated the Novice division at the WERA Grand National finals in Georgia 30 years ago.
