However, stranger things have happened, so both Baylor and Toth went into the race with guns blazing. Ryder Lafferty surprised everyone by posting the fastest time in the opening test, which put the New Jersey rider in a good spot for top contention. The Coastal Racing GasGas rider tripped the timer a second faster than Toth, with Rock- star Energy Husqvarna's Craig DeLong finishing third in the test. Baylor was fourth, ahead of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna's Trevor Bollinger. Baylor took tests two and three, but Toth found his groove and topped the final three tests of the day. After six tests and 52 miles of racing, Toth took the win with just over 29 seconds to spare ahead of Baylor. "I started off a little bit slow and just kind of a little cautious, WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAN MOORE J osh Toth finished off the 2021 Kenda AMA National Enduro Series with his fifth win of the season at the series finale—the Gobbler Getter Enduro in Alabama—and won- dering what could have been. Meanwhile, Steward Baylor Jr. stayed consistent and rode out an injury-riddled year to claim the 2021 championship title with a runner-up finish. Baylor started off the season with a pair of wins to take the early lead in the standings, while Toth nursed a hand injury to a 10th-place finish at the opener. Toth proceeded to win five of the next six races, but an 11th in Ohio—when he drowned out his bike while leading—left the FMF/ KTM rider in a hole he couldn't dig out of. Coming into the series finale, Baylor had such a lead that he only needed to finish 14th or Steward Baylor didn't have to win the Gobbler Getter Enduro to clinch the 2021 title: Second place was more than enough.
