LOOKING BACK
Steve Wise was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago
for winning the Superbikers race ahead of Graham Noyce and Eddie
Lawson at Carlsbad Raceway... A Honda XL80 topped all the high-
tech machinery at the Vetter High Mileage Contest. Mike Hishiki got
a winning 189 mpg and the $300 prize money... Mike Melton edged
out Husqvarna teammate Terry Cunningham by one second to win the
Cowbell National Enduro in Bellingham, Washington... We covered the
Griffith Park Sidecar Rally.
A Honda Hawk streamliner made front-page news for reaching a top speed
of 285 mph. It wasn't a record, because the Hawk did not make a second
run, which is a requirement to get in the record books... Yamaha's new GL
750 was also pictured on the front page after making its debut at the Tokyo
Motor Show... Malcolm Smith and teammate Gunnar Nilsson were the
top motorcycle finishers at the Baja 1000. The Husqvarna-mounted duo
was second overall... We covered the Jackass Enduro in Red Mountain,
California, where only 250 riders finished out of 750 starters.
