ington Beach , CA, Kelly Moran• .
Kelly won a ru n -off along with
brother Shawn in the American Final
against Scott Autrey to qualify for the
Overseas Final. T here, he was also
involved in a last-race, do-or-die attempt to keep his champ ionship ho pes
alive. Kelly scraped thro ugh that meet
by the skin of his teeth, bu t had no
problems in the next round, where he
scored riin e points.
This is Mora n 's second World Fina l
appearance. His first wa s in Pol and
in 1979; wh ere he fin ished a creditable fourth .
, Moran, often criticized for being
erratic (mainly off the track), can
always be cou n ted on to give his best
on the track. While he's no t favored
to take home any trophies from the
Coliseum, Moran can al ways be a
danger to the more fancied riders.
Moran is the type of rider who can
leave any of th e othe rs in the dust for
three straigh t races, the n finish dead
last in th e next two. It 's that unpredi ctability that makes Kelly such a
value to wa tch.
England
The biggest cha llenge m ust come
from the more experienced riders
from " across the pond." The challenge from the English ha s to be the
main concern of the defend ing champi on , and tha t thr~at comes ch iefly
from the small figure of Kenny Carter.
Carter, 21, rides for the Halifax
Dukes in the British .League. He
made his World Final debut last year
and was th e only rider to defeat
Penhall.
Three weeks before the Final,-Carterwas involved in a crash at Ipswitch
and spent several days in the intensive care ward after suffering a badly
bruised ch est and internal injuries.
Having shattered his jaw at the start
of the season, it will remain to be seen
if Carter can bounce straight back to
top form from such a recent injury,
although he still, intends to make a
bid for the title.
H e has had a phenomena l rise to
tJeM9 ~~
success, and has often had disagreements with World Champ Penhall,
both on and off the track.
Carter's guide and mentor is the
co-promoter of this event, legendary
six-time World Champion Ivan
Mauger, so Carter knows all about
the pressures of the big night. Expect
his name to be around at the end of it.
The second of th e four " Lions" in
the Final is the diminutive figure of
" wee" Dave Jessup. Jessup always
seems to get the bad luck on the big
night. In the 1978 Final Jessup had
the title all but won , when a cruel
en gine failure robbed him of the
crown.
