Rapid wheelie challenge I contend that I can do the fastest quarter mile wheelstand in the entire world! There have been rumored "wheelie contests." However, I have never been a ble to find a location or a date of such wheelie contests. Therefore I propose a challenge t o all comers, fo r a contest of the world's fastest wheelie through a quarter m ile. The rules, quite simply, are as follo ws: T he front w h eel m ust be a irborne throughout th e entire length of th e tr aps. A local drag strip would be id eal so th at speed ca n be computed. Failure to keep th e front wheel u p wo ul d constitu te disqual ifica tion . You must hav e th e front wheel up before yo u hit the start lights and it must stay up a ll the wa y to th e end traps. A mere quarter mile wheelie. I have al ready done this in excess of 100 mph .. Looking forward to hea ring from yo u. JIMMIE GENTILE 22626 Sou th Normandie Suite G Torra nce, CA 90502 213/320-0271 Thanks from Steve Richard I would like to than k a ll of the fine people at Ameri can Motocross Enterprises, Inc. , th e whole Indian Dunes crew , and to everyo ne who sent their wishes a nd ca rds while I was in th e hospital (to uch and go , I understand ) after an automobile acci dent July 10. I am now at home, trying to get what rest I can , although some co mplica tions have aris en. Bu t wi th th e great su p p ort fro m a ll of yo u and m y fin e fam il y, I will recover. And I h ope to see you at the ra ces once again, soon . A specia l th anks to Mich ael T aylor o f Barnett T oo l a nd En gineering and Daystar/ LO P in Arizo na . All of your concern for me has been very overwhelming and much appreciated. I never knew how many friends I had. Thank you very much. STEVE RICHARD 1508 Deanna Ave. Simi Valley, CA 93063 Poor precendent In regards to Alden Sievers' letter of congratulations to D-37 (Cycle News, Aug. 11,1982). I believe that an important poi n t has been overlooked. O n June 3 a num ber of resid ents of Shadow Mountain attended the m eeting of the Desert Distr ict Multiple Use Advisory Co uncil. In " testi mony" to the Co uncil, th e resi dents complainedof a n u mber of p roblems (trespassing, burglary, va nda lism, intim idatio n, etc.) being caused by "hordes" of " bi kers." In listening to these p eople, two i tems became ,,:ery clear: I .) Most of the alleged problems in vo lved serious vio la tio ns of criminal law . Yet loca l la w en fo rcem ent authorities were not being in vo lved in th e si tu a tion. 2. ) ORVusers (read " bikers") were totally disliked by th is group. Only a co m p le te ban on ORV use in th e area would satisfy them . At the m eeting Rick Hammel proposed to have some m embers of D-37 in th e area during th e J ul y 4 weekend to remind ORV us ers against trespassing. This seeme d like an excellent idea. But, surprise! In read in g th e Federa l R egister and th e local m edia, we find that the BLM instituted an " emergen cy closure" for th e area (Federal Register , June 30,1982; p . 28460) and D-37 " p o liced it. " So what? While it is true th at only a small number of ORV use rs may have been mildly inco n ven ienced , the implications of these actions loom much larger. In institu ting the " em erge ncy closure" th e Bureau stated that it was done for the following reasons: I. ) To protect health and safety of local residents and recr eationists. 2.) To protect th e resources and p rivate structures from wildfire. How m any other areas co u ld be cl osed for similar rea sons? On th e ba sis o f possi ble wildfire d anger , you cou ld shut the entire C DCA a ny time you wanted . In supporting this action, D-37 h as implied tha t closure of areas to all ORV user s is an appropriate method of handling unrelated problems. This a poor and very dangerous p recedent to set. It places all .of our rights to use public land at the whim of ORV ha ters and bureaucrats look- MX team f und-raisi ng update I'd like to thank everyone who has ~ ordered or bought aT-shirt or has sent a donation to fund the American MX Team that we are sending to Europe for the Motocross and Trophee des Nations. .It is the opinion of many of toe European riders and their representatives that the U .S. team was lucky last year and will be unable to repeat their , World Team Championship perfotmance of winning both events. It is "" possible that they are right but I don't He thi n k so. The important thing is to I make sure that they go a nd represen us. Like last year, this year's team wil~· be a grass roots supported effort and funded by people involved in motorcycl in g. T he team picked by the AMA co n sists of Johnny O 'M a ra , Don n ie Hansen , Danny Chandler, Darrell Shult z a n d Ji m G ib son a s an al ternate. Roger DeCoster and Dave Arn old will be th e Am erican tea m m a nagers. / At th e US G P in U nad ill a we ra ised $ 1000 in sh irt sal es a nd $ 1800 in an auct ion a fter th e event using apparel and gear donat ed .by the rider s. We are going to n eed a ll th e help we can get to rais e the necessary $50,000. Many clubs have exp ressed an interest in helping and I'd like to ca ll Cycle News readers ' attention to an 'event being held by Cycliers M.e. in Bakersfield. This club is throwing a benefit short tr a ck at Bakersfield Speedway o n Au g . 21 with all p roceeds to go to th e America n tea m . T h ere will be a specta tor drawing for a Honda Ex p ress donated by Honda Center. It 's all for a good cause! Thanks guys.
