Charlie Su llivan (3 1) took the 85cc Modified (1 2 - 15) win ; Eric Stump (1 7), the 1 0 0 cc Schoolboy (1 2 - 1 5) w in , entry fliers, and most dirt track riders came unprepared to race a motocross bike, or even run with knobbies, much less race against motocrossers on a WFO track. Some of th e riders p acked up a nd deci ded not to run, which contri buted to the small entry of on ly 90 riders per day, compared to the 150 entries each day of the sh ort track National s. .Kla rnfoth did a good job of keeping th e surface smoot h and dust- free for two scorching, sunny days. , The 125cc class began Wednesday's youth program with Tim Cuthbert and R usty Rogers leading their heats from start to finish . In the 100cc Sch oolboy class, Eric St ump had the lead, fell bac k to third, then reg ained firs t for th e checkered. Charlie Su ll ivan ran away with his heat while Ro bbie Vanconant came from midpack to first for his heat win in the 85cc Modified (12-15) class . Don Martin raced from start to finish for first in the85cc Modified (7-i 1) class. For the 85cc Stock (12-15) class, R ogers moved out of mid-pack to win the heat and Sullivan ran away with another heat win. Darrell Davis won the 85cc Stock (7-11) class hands down, and so did Troy johnson in the 65cc Stock (7-I I ). In the final heat of the day, Stock 5Icc class winner Scott Huff made his move from midpack to take the checkered. Of the three semi heats to run, Tom Dsoski, Ern est Estes and Todd Martin ran away with the wins in the 125cc, 85cc Modified (12-15) and 85cc Stock (12-15)-classes, respectively. When the finals began the first of the local District II A motocrossers ma de his appearance in gran d style. Cu th bert blitzed off the starting line of the 125cc class and waltzed away to the win. Don Martin was second but bike problems put him back to fifth at the en d of the race. Rogers was third u ntil he laid his water-cooled MXer over in a lon g slide in tu rn one. By th e ti me h e was going again he was tenth, but h e worked back to fin ish third beh ind Bria n At herton, who made h is move fro m mid-pack an d worked up to second. Robby O liver led th e 100cc class, but bike problems left h im in third at th e ch eckered. Todd Haas and Eri c Stump began to battle for first. They stayed with each othr for the entire race wi th Stump coming out ahead at RustY ,Rogers (1 8 ), Randy Turbett (1 6) and Dan Martin (7 1) ran 3-4-5 in _ 125cc Schoolboy action, Rogers and Marti~ were tops in other classes. There was plenty of gold to go around at the awards ceremonies. Tim ,Cut h bert was the only double class winner. At the restart, Brian Pankey jumped to an early lead, but was soon reeled in by Distri ct II MXer Sullivan, who eventually- won. Mark Gibson came from mid-pack to second at the finish , with Pankey third. " In the 85cc Modified (7-11) class Davis led until he fell. Don Martin ran to the class win. John Flee ner II followed Martin for second, while Audie Huff, Jr. worked his way up from mid-pack to third. ' ' Rogers broke into the lead of th e 85ccStock (12-15) class, but was soon feeling the pressure of Sullivan. As the two diced for position, they left the pack behind. Rogers held onto first at the finish, Sullivan was second, and Gibson displaced a rider for third at the finish. The 85cc Stock (7-ll) class saw Troy Johnson jump into the lead, but he was soon nabbed by Fleener, who took first by a very narrow margin over Davis. Davis made a move for second on Johnson, but they both collided and went down . Davis quickly recovered for fifth and raced back to second. johnson came out hot in the 65cc Stock (7-11) class and quickly moved into first, which he held to the checkered. Jess R oeder had second for awhile, until he spun out in an 'in field .tu rn , Larry Pegram went to the end in second an d Roeder held third. T he 100cc class opene d the heat races on T hursda y's Am a teur p ortion with Nickie Fonta na racin g uncontested to the win. Cu th bert an d Don Martin took the I25cc class heats, wi th bo th racing alo ne from start to fin ish. Scott Saun ders ran o ut front from start to finish to win th e 360cc class heat race . T he 500cc class first heat saw G eorg e Ro eder co me up from mid-pack near the end to win by a large margin. Secon d heat winner Den n y Burkett, also a District 11 A class MXer, raced .uncontested to the finish. Ralph Dunca n moved into the lead on the second lap of the O p en class h ea t and then ran to victory. Armbruster made his mo ve for first while T im May and Rodney Gillis moved into second and third, respectively.
