Emde, Keith Kiyo ta and the rest of the field . Kiyota moved by Emde on the start of the second lap as th ey entered turn one. Humble, Kiyo ta, Emde, Craig Morri s - the.pole sitter - and Labrosse gathered together in close forma tion in a good fight. McDonald was mov ing through traffi c from a back row start after crashing in his heat race. McDonald was on an almost " new" bike as, he had to rep lace the frame and rebuild his engine Saturday night. Merkel was also on the move and · was into sixth by lap four from a last row start. Morr is, on his ai r-cooled Yamaha 350, w a s sh o w i n g the strength of his engine as he move d into second. As th e field entered th e in field on the fifth lap, Kiyota went down in a fast sweepe r. He was up quickly, but coul dn' t get restarted. Labro sse and Em de moved up a spot to third an d fourt h. Morris moved into the lead on lap six. Humble lodged on his rear tir e and the two pulled away fro m Labro sse and Emde. Merkel led Randy Renfrow, Don Greene, McDonald, Rhys Howard and Russ Pa ulk. On the ne xt lap, Emde moved around Labro sse wit h a smooth outside pass thro ugh the sweep ing tum one. By the halfway flags , Morris had gained a two second advantage overHumble. Em de and Labrosse were in a fairing-to-fairing duel for third as Merkel closed on them. Greene, in sixt h, was feelin g a lot of pressure from McDonald and Renfrow as Paulk worked to move up on the trio. Rod , Cros by was also charging after a start fro m th e back of the grid because of problems on the start. On the ninth lap, Morris went down in the same tu m that had claimed Kiyota earlier and turned the lead over to Humble. Labrosse was now second, followed by Emde, while Merkel wa s eating away a t the gap to third. . On the next lap, Merkel pulled out the stops and ca ugh t and passed Emde for third. H e then set hi s sights on Labrosse. Humble's lead quickly dwindled to only two seconds on lap 12. Merkel moved around Labrosse for second and had clear sailing in his figh t to catch H um ble. "I won fro m the back of th e pack in last year 's Novice race ," Merkel had said before the start, "and I think I can do it . again. " Starting lap 13, the lead four were ru nning nos e to tail. Merkel the n po unc ed and took the lead fro m H umble in the infield. . Merkel put slower traffic between hi mself and H umble as the two started the final lap. La brosse kept close tabs as Emde dropped off the pace a bit, and Green and Renfro w trai led a good distance back. Merkel put a slower rider between h imself and Humble as th e two sped to the chicane. Humble closed the gap again 'o n ly to have his bike " get comp letely sideways on the banking."
