"Bad Brad" dominated both the 80cc Junior and 80cc Senior classes, until, while working on a perfect score after smoking his first three races, it came down to the final lap of the last rnoto, At that point, "Bad Brad" truly lived tip to his name - grounding with a bad get-off just one turn after taking the white flag. It resulted in a DNF for Lewis, putting him out of the 80cc Junior class. Lewis took home the top trophy in the 80cc Senior class. Second went to , Steve Hill 's 2-2. Third was Chris Lumley, 5-3. As it turned out in the 80cc Juniors, after Lewis exited, first was left to Mike Franks, Jr. (Kaw). Franks finished second to "Bad Brad" in the first go 'round. Second overall was bagged by Robert Baker (4-2) and Carl Keough of Mineola caught third place in both races. A similar situation developed in the Mini Open category. Honda rider John Britt DNF the first time out only to come back and beat everyone' in the second moto. The class was won by Steve Hill. Mitchell Hulsey on a Honda (2-3) was behind Hill while Mike Franks (4-4) finished third. Other doubles were scored by Kevin ' Rivers (Suz) in the Over 30 and Open (scored together) and in the Beginner class, Mark Payne was hot on his Honda both times out. Spectators were treated to the sight of one of the country's finestfemale -hotshoes in -the Beginner races. From Conroe came Julie' Jamail to mix it up with the boys. jamail jammed and jumped her 250cc Yamaha with the best of them and found fourth place at the end of rnoto number one. Charging hard after -a poor start in the second contest, Jamail, for what it's worth , looked liked she would possiblv reel in third place when she dumped where Mini MXer " Bad Brad" had lost it. The misfortune came shortly after the white flag signaled the start of the final trip around. By the time Jamail got going again she had dropped far behind and had to settle for ninth and seventh for the day. . The 250cc Intermediates saw more than their share of DNFs including riders to rid e with a sn orkel so th ey wouldn 't drown inside their helmets ; Ch arles McDonald rode his Suzuki from a fifth-pl ace start to a fir st-place finish in the first moto of the first group of 125cc Nov ice riders. He was followed by Frank Friedel 's Honda an d Mike Mewhart's Suzuki. Freidel parked his bike in the first turn of the second moto and tried to ru n the race on foot, but he abandoned the untraditional approach when h e found himself impeded by a hail strom of sweat-soaked dirt clods launched by the horde of bikes who ' were suddenly, inexplicably in front of him. Leading the horde were Mewhart an d McDonald. Mewhart held his lead for several laps, while Freidel passed rider after rider until he took th ird. McDonald finally took the lead near the end of the race, earning him a first overall. In the 250cc Intermediate division, Paul Horton took the holeshot on his Honda, but quickly lost the lead to Rob Ashton 's Yamaha and then lost second to Perry Mason 's Suzuki. The three riders remained first, second and third throughout the race . Ashton avoided falling for a change but did manage to show off for his fiance with so m e 's ty l i s h front-wheel landings. Wishing to improve on his performance, Ashton took the holeshot in the second moto, as well as leading the whole race. His only impediment was riding through the berms he had put in the air the. lap before. Chris Sharp came in second on his Yamaha, followed by Perry Mason. The starting gate may seem like an uphill sta rt for the Mini Juniors, but Gl en Starback overcame that obstacle with his Yamaha; a third and a first gave him first overall in the class the largest one of th e evening. The Experts rode alongside the Open and Over 30 riders - until the first turn. Frank Tello's Honda led the entire first moto, while Mike Farmer worked his Yamaha up to seco nd after being nosed out at the start. Second moto start saw Rusty Burns edge out Chuck Loftin's Yamaha for the early lead, Burns riding a Honda in the Open class. Loftin subsequently fell back to fourth behind Farmer and Tello. By the end of the second lap Farmer had taken over the lead, and Loftin had regained second. Bu rns fell back to fourth but led his class for the second time in a row. Results MINI JR : 1.
