Bear Hensley tops in Utah By Eric Raits PRICE, UT, AUG. 7-8 Coloradoan Bear Hensley topped the list of money winners at the CEMA two-day motocross held at the Price, UT County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday. The rangy Grand Junction resident won the 250cc Expert class on Saturday, beating Scott Nielson and Alan Takemori, and finished third in the 125s behind Kenny Ulibarri and Brad Frampton, then slipped to another third Sunday in the 250s and a fourth in the 125s. Gary Randall dominated the Open Experts on Saturday with a pair of lengthy margins over nearest competitors Mark Bloemke and Gaven Dillard and threatened to repeat on Sunday by grabbing his third consecutive holeshot and opening an enormous lead when the 45 foot dropoff disintegrated his rear wheel and ret ired him for the da y. Mark Bloemke finished second to Randall Saturday and first on Sund~y for second on th e list of money WInners. Salt Lake City's pride, Kenny Ulibarri, had a fin e weekend in 125cc Expert racing with a first on Saturday and a second on Sunday. Brad Frampton equaled that performance, finishing second to Ulibarri on Saturday and was untouchable with two wins on Sunday. . Scott Nielson, behind Bear Hensley on Saturday, lost a chance for an impressive weekend when the disc brake on his Kawasaki locked up tight in Sunday's first mota. Bob Thomas was Sunday's 250cc winner ahead of Scott Wright. Mini Expert Brent Smith made it a perfect weekend with four wins in as many races. Smith had the power on the straightaways to pull Jeff Bartholemew and Troy Lerwill who had to settle for a second and third apiece. Smith was superb on starts except for the first mota on Sunday when he had to work from a dead last start to overtake the entire pack. Steve Luczak shone in the 125cc Novice division with four wins in as many motos. David Curtis, Tony Campbell, and Matt Smith took firsts both days in their divisions. Randy Lindsay won four races in the Over 30 class; the first three were routine with Lindsay running away and leaving Preston Gerber and Laddie King to fight it out for the runnerup spot. . . Price area motorcycl ists enjoy a unique relationship with Carbon County officials who donated land for the track and help with heavy equipment for maintenance. A permanent sprinkler system has · been installed with donations of pipe and cash from local merchants making this track the gem of Inter-mountain motocross courses. The Gopher-its ran a smooth, professional operation ' - fast-paced and popular with the riders. A potentially serious neck injury to Johnny Ross was the only incident to mara fine program. . Suntana MX drawsa crowd By Eric Raits SPRINGVILLE, UT, JULY 30 Women and children didn't faint in a stifling crush of humanity but there was a large group of riders and a sizeable bunch of spectators at Suntana Fri, day night. Wyoming sent a contingent from Walker's Cycle in Lyman' which acquitted itself with a pair of seconds, a third, fourth and fifth. Three-time Wyoming State Champ, Leonard Walker, back in racing at age 35 after a five year hiatus in Alaska working on drilling rigs, rode Open Novice and finished a credit- able third. Morgan Williams was the class of the Open Novices with a pair of wins and steady Randy Gray's second and third beat Walker's second and fourth. Rhett Greenhalgh topped the Open Experts, beating Jeff Boyd and Kevin Bogue. Desert Expert Bogue used the first moto to learn the track and finished second. . In the second moto, Bogue holeshot and looked like he was headed for the overall win. A berm tripped him up and dropped him to last where a scramble back to third earned the show spot.Arlan Ault had his way with the 250cc Experts after Kelly Sorensen disposed of himself in a fall in the second moto after winning the first. Ault was just behindSorensen in the first mota then nabbed the holeshot in the second and flew to an uncatchable lead. Kenny Ulibarri was plagued by bad starts in both rnotos and spent the night working up from last to finish fourth in the first moto and from fifth to second in the last for a second overall ahead of Dean Brook. Top 250cc Amateur Bob Wilson won two for undisputed first while Jeff Barnes and Lynn Hiatt traded 2-3 finishes in a squeaker for the runner up spot. . Barnes led by a halfbikelength at the flag.
