Anderson, Eaton pummel PIR Pro challenge By Brian Barnes PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 5 With $1,000and extra incentives added by local dealers on the line, Jim Anderson (Yamaha support/MX Fox/ ATK/Dallas Baker Products) and Eric Eaton (Husky USA/Answer Products) took the money and ran in today's Pro challenge held at Portland International Raceway. . Some 231 riders and the great spectator turnout, were treated to the best Pro racing seen all year at PIR. Vancouver Yamaha/Suzuki, Cycle World Honda, Maico/Husky Northwest and Crowell Auto Parts all made donations that really spiced up the program and were appreciated greatly by the contestants. • Anderson was the biggest winner , piloting his support Yamaha to four victories in four tries and winning both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes. In 125cc action, he took a picture perfect holeshot and motored away for the win. The big race was going on behind And erson for the next positions, with Yamhill Yamaha's Mark Gregson , S & W Motors Steve Corcoran and Ron Sun, from Portland Honda, all chal1enging for second. Gregson showed his experience and claimed second. Corcoran was third, Sun fourth and Kevin Jansen (Kaw support/Dimeos Gym) came from way back for fifth. . The second mota saw Anderson again jet into the lead with Sun, Ted Holt (D &S Cycles /Suzuki) and Jansen chasing after him. That order ran one through four for most of the race with Sun and Holt swapping places from time to time. On the last lap, Anderson led the group across .th e finish line with Sun a strong second. Holt 's great performance came to an end 100 yards from the flag with a seized motor allowing Jansen third , followed by Corcoran and Gregson. Holt was awarded the $25 hard luck award for his efforts. With a couple of Open Pro Ca lifornia riders here today , racing promised to be exciting. Scott T yler and Eric Eaton dueled th e entire fir st mota with T yler hanging on for th e win. Eaton was a clo se second. Mr. Bill Jewell (Motor Meister/O'Neall Team Montoya) finish ed third and Pro-Circuit/MX Fox /CMC numberone plate holder David Gerig was fourth. The second mota saw Eaton outdistance Gerig for the win. Tyler came back from a spill to finish third, J ewell was fourth and Gresham Suzuki 's Barney Newman took fifth . Results PP: 1. Watilo also split wins with Rick Bozarth (Gresham Suz ) in the 250cc Pro dash to finish second, taking home th e biggest paycheck at Mt, View Ra ceway. Rowdy Blasdell (G resha m Suz ) came out of his self-imposed retirement to sweep the Open class. Watilo led the first 125ccPro charge around turn one, followed by Kevin Hofenbredl (Suz) and Jansen. Hofen bredl and Jansen battled for the second spot for several laps before Jansen took over and set his sights on Watilo. Jansen found his way into the lead on the next to the last lap for the win. Mota two started the same as the first, but Watilo led al1 the way this time. Hofenbredl and Jansen rode en d to end much of the mota with Hofenbredl fighting off the repeated charges by Jansen. Hofenbredl still led as they went out of sight on the next to last lap, but Jansen came into .view first to nab the second spot. Bozarth , David Hettinga (Ya m of Salem/RW Racing) and Watilo leaped ahead of the 250cc Pros in a three man battle that changed halfway th r o u g h the mota when Bozarth clipped a tire that had been flipped onto his favorite line. H e went down and Hettinga tangled with him. Watilo went by to lead th e rest of the way while Bozarth got going in second and Heuinga took tim e au t for repairs. Jon Buyas (Suz/Buyas Meat Co .) finished third. Watilo led into the first turn on moto two, but just at the apex of the turn Bozarth stuck his nose inside to lead out of the corner. That was just a bo u t the margin he held over Watilo in a hard fought battle for the rest of the race . Hettinga held third while Bu yas, with a flat tire , tried frantica lly to hold fourth over Jerry Wilson (Suz), Wilson won out. Results PEE WEE JR : 1. Chad Kishpaugh (Yam); 2. Chris Cate (Yam); 3. I The American Federation of Motorcyclists North met today for their annual Golden Gate Challenge/National Motorcycle Patrol race . The club's fastest riders were present - taking the opportunity to test before the upcoming AMA National to be held at Sears Point on Aug. 21-22. They also had their eye on the $1000 purse offered in the Challenge race. The lunch time activities of the da y included a presentation to the National Motorcycle Patrol. Van ce Breese, AFM North's President, thanked the group for their support of motorcycle racing with a check for over $1000. .' The Golden Gate Challenge is an AFM tradition - the 10 best racers from AFM North challenge the 10 best riders from AFM South to a no . holds barred shoot out to see who is the fastest in the club. The riders "run what they brung." The Challenge race took place at the end of the day when the track was cooling and the sun was angling dangerously across turns two and . three, but that had no effect on the lap times of AFM's cream-of-the-crop, Jon Woo, on his Gesick Welding/ Champion Moriwaki Kawasaki, took the holeshot with Kerry Bryant, on his B&T Kawasaki/Shoei/ND 750cc Superbike, and Rich Oliver hot on his heels. Woo immediately set a blistering pace cutting lap times near th e track record for Superbikes. Bryant was riding the wheels off his 750 just to keep Woo's 1000cc bike in sight. On the third lap the two strokes, which were left in a cloud of smoke at the starting line by the "muscle bikes," began to assert themselves. Dwayne Chung on his Berkeley Yamaha/Red Line Oi llND TZ250 passed Rich Oliver to take third. The race ended with Woo clearly in front , followed by Bryant, Chung and Oliver. Dennis Fryer was the first southern rider across the line in ninth place. With the addition of many southern riders coming up for the Challenge race , the Open Modified Pro- . duction class showed some unexpectedly good racing. Terry Statum took the holeshot followed by Mike Kauzlarich on his San Francisco Honda /Suzuki GSllOOand Dan Hart on his Salinas Kawasaki GPZlIOO. Kauzlarich was slowed for a lap, but once he got by Statum he stretched out a lead on Hart, who was trying to get around Statum. Meanwhile, Ken Evan, troubled with wobbles early in the race, had found a smoother way around the track. He seemed to come from nowhere to pressure Hart on the last
