PORTLAND, OR, JULY 8 The Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association held its second two-day event of the year at Portland International Race- - 50 wa y this weekend. Saturday wa s hot and sunny for open practice and new riders' school, but Su nday da wn ed cloudy and wet. PIR had been the site of a big-time a u to (i.e, oil dumper ) rac e th e previous weekend and a light, inter mittent rain created th e slickest tra ck, at . times, in an yone's experience. Howard Pinkstaff, after a flag-to£lag duel with John Moffett in th e fir st heat of the Open Single GP , won the heat by about two bikelengths. In th e second h eat , in th e ra in, Moffett used a treaded rear tire and lapped P inkstaff, who still had on slicks. " T he son of a gun punch ed me on th e shoulder when he lapped me," Pinkstaff said. " I sta rted to gas her up and race h im th e la st lap u nt il m y brain got back in charge of m y g lands." Turn workers on turn one fel t compelled to carefully pace off th e distance traversed when Tony Howard crashed his KZ750, because th ere was an obvious track record in volved. The numbers, now accepted as official by OMRRA, ar e 564 feet for th e bike and 375 feet for Howard. Howard, unscathed, described it. " I sat up to brake at marker five. I'm always red-lined in fifth at the end of th e straight, which is about 130, I guess. I touched the front brake and was instantly on the track and sliding. The track was so slippery I could move to different positions as I was sliding. I found just sitting up with your legs straight out in front is the most comfortable." jeff Doan won th e 600cc Cafe class on his very fast RD 400, which is no t so unusual , but 600cc Cafe was ru n in a combined heat with Formula I a nd Doan won the overall, edgi n g ou t Mike Sorge on a 970cc Honda. Though slicks are legal in Cafe , Doan has always run K81R Dunlops a nd they were especially effective on th e wet track. - Results OPEN PROD: 1. Jeff Morrow (Suz); 2. Keith Pink staff (Suz); 3.
