PRODUCT EVALUATION Scott M odel 90 goggles T he one thing that sets the Scott Model 90 goggles apart from all others is th eir G ray Gradien t Lexan®lens. The lens is unique in th e sen se that is is a very dark gray at the top and beco mes li g h ter until abou t halfway down where it is clear , sort of like some su nglasses. In addition, th e sh aded p ar t is curved, coming do wn to the lower left and right edges of th lens , instead of straight across. • We found th e concept wor ks well, especiall y early in the morning or la te in the aft ernoon when the su n is Iow a n the horizon . Ri din g fro m dark, shaded areas into brigh t su n ligh t also proved their worth . A slight tip forward wi th your helmet m eant loo kin g through the dark gray area, with less squintin g and eye strain. O n the other han d, running u n dernea th large tree s didn 't leave yo u with a lens too dark, m akin g yo u wish for a Cibie Su p er Oscar. The black frame and strap were co m fo rta ble for a number of different faces and helmets. Scott tear-o ffs a n d face masks fit wit h no problem s. Dusty or sa ndy conditio ns, however, would invaria bly ca u se us to find that some dirt or sand had wo rked its way past th e foa m and someti mes into our eyes. In addition, the foam u sed to cushion th e frame again st the wearer 's face didn ' t seem to absorb m uch perspira tio n . Conseq uen tl y, when riding hard, drops of swea t o ften rolled into o ur eyes or onto the lens, making vision a bit blurry. Scott Model 90 goggles retain for $24.95. M ark Kariya Tire Yoke It's pro bably no t a coin cidence that MotoRace distributes the Tire Yoke tire iro n and Metzeler tires since Metzelers enjoy a well a deserved reputation for being bear to change. T ire Yokes are a new shape in tire irons to help put on the toughest tires. The arri vial our our Tire Yoke coincided with the yearly tire change of an XR500. We had a gian t 5.1Ox18 TerraFlex on hand for the re-shoeing . A real bear, bu t our Tire Yoke did the job as advertised . The iron measures in at 15 inches and has an unusual bend in one end. T he odd bend is used to break the bead and to hold the tire in to the well of the rim . An added benefit of the bent iron is the protection th at it affords the changer's knuckles. They are several inches fart her away from the spokes and sprocket than a conventional iron when pulled all the way over . Our TerraFlex changed with no tire lube and without a great deal of trouble . especially surprising since the edi tor involved hates to change tires. MotoRace recommends that they be used in pairs but we got by with one and a conventional iron. T ire Yokes are available from MotoRace, one for $7.95 or two for $14.95. Get them from P. O . Box 861, Wilbraham , MA 01095. They wan t you to pay the shipping . Karel Kramer JAWA ~ orYuASA Compare the features . . . th en compare th e price.
