The California Department of Parks and Recreation in conjunction with EDAW, Inc., recently conducted public workshops to allow the OHV trail user the opportunity to assist in planning for the development of a statewide network of OHV trails. From the attendance figures , I wonder if anyone cares about the future of trail riding in California. Onl y 26 people attended the workshops in Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Diego even though the meetings were publicized in Cycle News, A TV News, numerous other OHV publications and local newspapers, and those who attended said th ey called around to spread th e-word. Those few individuals who did show up, provided valuable inpu t 'and were very enthusiastic about th e proposed plan. EDAW, a planning firm under contract with State Parks to produce th e plan, presented th e results of their OHV user survey, reviewed th eir recentl y completed sta tewide inv entory of OHV tra ils , and displayed a huge map of the State which showed wh ere a statewide network of trails might be located to provide access to all the areas you , th e users , prefer to recreate. When this plan is complete, we will know wh ere we should be spending the OHV (G reen Stickie) Fund to develop 0 HV trails. . O ur nex t set of meetings will be held in September/October to di scuss the preliminary plan of the actual trai l network. Watc h for not ification of the meeting dates and please be there if you care. HE NRY M. Ra cers have really supported this event thro ugh the years and we would like to have a great turnout of the grand old men (and women ) of MX. Local riders are going all-out to support this event; one individual has even donated ambulance service for th e day! So again, we would like to invite everyone up for a great day of racing and a chance at some great contingencies and prizes. See you at the races! " DAISY" DAVE HOWARD Los Alamos, CA 805/344-4785 Bad Brad, ~orld Champion I would like to congratulate Brad Lackey on winning the 500cc World Motocross Championship. Bad Brad has realized a fantastic accomplishment and fulfilled a career dream , as well as making many Americans very proud. Some of the media have downplayed Lackey 's pursuit of a World Championship. What they were not realizing was that Brad gave up a great deal of money and many National victories to pursue this goal. While today's top American riders 'are capable of winning anywhere, it wasn't that way 10 years ago when Brad first went to Europe. At that time Brad had just won the 500cc National Championship and was probably the best America had to offer. ' La ckey chose to forfeit the money tha t goes wi th being th e best in America in order to som e da y be the best in th e world. Remember - a t th e tim e an American 10th p la ce fin ish in a grand prix was a major accom pli shmen t. How man y of toda y' s America n champi ons would lik e to trade the pay they get for winni ng for IOth place paychecks. You m ust ad mire Brad's competitiveness and desire. Anyway, congratulations to the World Cha m p ion, Brad Lackey, and good luck to our fu ture 250cc World Ch ampion , Danny LaPorte. Way to go, Brad! LOUIE SPRINGER Cudahy, CA This letter is in response to Rick Gochnaur's letter that appeared in the Aug. 18 issueof Cycle News.. We of District 37 don't air our problems in the press. Rather, we gather the facts and tackle the problem head on. This is what we did at Shadow Mountain/EI Mirage on July 3,1982. The BLM closed some small portions of land adjacent to private property to help protect not only the land owners, but the ORV users as well. Feelings were running high and we didn't want any confro n tations. District 37's premise was to inform the public of the situation and help prevent the ORV users from being cited for trespass. Everyone contacted (approximately 7(0) thanked us for the effort. Apparently this worked because the BLM , Sheriff and the Highway Patrol didn't issue any trespass citations in 'Shadow Mountain. It would have. been nice if Mr. Gochnaur, who wasn't there that weekend, had called me. I would have explained the facts to him. Thus . he would have saved us from having to explain a worthwhile public service in the press. Closure isn't my idea of a management option, but we have to do what we can under the circumstances. As an added note, I don't see Mr. Gochnaur out fighting the real closures. He is not out in Jawbone/Butterbredt with the rest of us. I guess he isn't aware that 95% of that prime riding area will be closed this fall . RICK HAMMEL President, AMA District 37 . Valencia, CA Hammer benefit? I keep seeing letters and bits in Latest Poop about the condition of Bruce Hammer. One this is for sure: he has to be out of insurance benefits, particularly if you can believe the Blue Cross ads. One wonders if the AFM and Laguna Seca could get together and make their non-points race at that track on Aug. 29 a benefit for Bruce to help defray some of his hospital and rehabilitation costs .
