Last Chance Qualif ier Brow took ad van tage of a battle for second among Rich King, Parker and Pearso n to pull out his lead. Bro w took an easy win to grab the last spot on the National grid. Nat ional The field was varied fo r the Na tional with five Hondas, five Kawasakis, two Yamahas, two H arleys and one Ca n -Am on the 6-6-3 gri d. Kawasaki had posted a $5,000 bonus for a Green Meanie win. There was plenty of h a nd lebar banging on th e start among Sp ringsteen , G oss and J orgensen . The three fin all y sorted th ings out as they exited tu m four and headed toward the startfin ish li ne and the end of lap one . Springsteen held the edge over the shad o w in g J org en sen a n d G o ss. Hebb, Eklund, Herndon and Mer ten s followed. Springsteen held on through laps two and three, bu t on lap four Jorgensen flew past coming off tum four and that was it as far as the win was concerned. Mea nwhi le, Ek lu nd had m o ved from fifth to fourth at Hebb's expense and then dropped Goss fro m th ird. T he battle for second com menced on lap five as Eklund rolled right up on Springsteen 's rear tire . Two la ps la ter, Eklund was by and it wa s Sp ringsteen' s time to ride in third p lace. _ Behind the top three on la p eight, G oss, H ebb , Shobert and H ern don were battling for fourth as Mert ens and Jones debat ed eighth. Fu rt her bac k it was Poo vey, Day and Brow for tenth, while Kidd, Bradley and Scott contested 13th. The halfway flags in the 25 lap National saw J orgens en in complete command, not skipping a beat or making a mista ke. Springsteen, in seco nd, was still glued to Eklund and Shobert had moved to the front of the duel for fourth. Bro w was in 12th , but about to put on a display of outside passing that would move him to sixth by the finish. Mertens was quickly out after losing his exhaust pipe. O ne lap later, la p 14, Ekl und ended h is second place ride with a flat rear tire. "A rea l bummer," said Eklund later. " I' m not sure what happened since it was the same compou nd tire and air pressure I've been running for the past month." Jorgensen was set into a winning mode and wou ld finish with a five second marg in o ver Sp rin gsteen . Shobert was now in th ird and that set winner's circle ceremonies which were still ten la ps away. O n lap 16 H ern don moved into fourth for good. The Jones/Brow battle for fifth raged over the final laps. Bro w got by Jones one lap from the flag, bu t J ones returned the favor and finished fifth.
