Burn s defea ted Baugh , 8.07/175.09 to 8.69/1 54.90. In the final neither rider had a ch a nce a t the national speed record. Kizer had run 178.57 in qualifying and Bu rn s had gone 180.00. A run within I % was req uired to back up a new reco rd. Off the starting line it was tight but soon the Turbo-alcohol ' bike o f Bu rn s pulled away to a 7.92 at only 169. 17 to . Kizer's 8.91 at 142.63. ....... ....... Pro Stock Fifteen of the count ry's top bikes sh o wed up to try to q ualify in an eig h t bike field. All of this year's current top 10 and last year's top eight riders were on han d . Randy Mason, wh o won two weeks ago at English town, missed the cut with a 8.991. Vance was number one with a 8.76 followed by George Babor 's best run ever of 8.80. Dave Schultz's two-stroke tri pl e was thi rd with an 8.89 and Larry Cook rounded ou t the top half of the field with an 8.93. In the first rou n d Van ce and " Su perbike Mike" Keyte faced each other in what at most other events would be the fina l. Dave Sch ulz put out Jay Krieder's Kawasaki wi th a 9.01 to Joe's 9.15. Ba bor on the Mu rdoch Racing Kawasaki wa s late off the starting line and Bob Carpenter won the race with a 9.13 to Babo r's quicker 9.01. Orego n 's Larry Cook fin ished the round with a win over Joe Folgore, 9.0 1 to 9.03 in another close race. " " In the second rou nd the two-s troker, Sch ultz, scored his first win ever over Vance in 'the closest of close " races with a 9.061 to Terry's 9.064. Vance was running harder at the top end with 146.81 mp h toSchultz's 141.95 but reaction time wins races, no t top end speed. Cook took the race fro m Carpen ter 9.03/ 144.46 to Bob's 9.25/ 141.28. No matter who won the final it wou ld produce the fifth diffe rent winner out of six NMRA Pro Stock even ts this year. Cook got a sm all j u mp off th e line on Schultz and the two -stroke couldn ' t catch up. Cook ran a n 8.83 to Sch ultz's 8.93. Pro Co mp The elapsed time record in P ro Co mpeti tion was assau lted this weeken d. Three riders: Jeff Ree l, R ick Ste tson and Ron Dur ha m all wen t well under the old record of 8.62. By the end of the event Stetson had the ne w record at 8.44 and the win . In the fin al he defeated Orlando 's Jeff Reel; in a battle of Suzukis, 8.44/ 154.10 to 8.58/ 151.77. Durham had hit the speed record with a run at 155.44 but missed backing it up by a mere .05 mph. Su per Modified The Yamaha dea lers th a t helped out with the Western Nationals with free pit passes and bike giveaways were pleased'by the winning performa nce of Joe Yerager on the Seca 750. Yeager is u ndefeated th is year and lo wered the record once again with the shaft -dr iven bike to a 10.17 at 128.75.
