Although h e suffered a twi sted knee in th e final da y's action and di d not show the form that had put hi m on top earl y, Bill y Stork built up a big enough lead going into the fin al event to hold off runner-up Mi ke Fri end, who p ulled within 26 po ints of Stork in th e last race of th e series. T he final tall y was 316 to 290, in favor of Sto rk . The most im proved rider over th e entire season had to be Dave Molder , who with stro ng finishes in the fin al weeks , rom ped up to th ird ahead of Tom Peters. Wade Rice also put in a consistent series and finished fifth overall in .points. As for th e O p en winner Mi ke Sh urman, it was sheer consistency th at earned h im his title. Altho ugh he won fewer motos and overalls than the other sta te champions, Shurman was always in the to p trio every ri de, and pulled in with an 84-point victory margin at the end of the series.
