Yamaha 's Gary Jones was again top American at third place, and third pl ace was all he needed to cl inch the overall series title. Teammate Jimmy Weinert was fourth o verall ahead of Torsten Hallman a nd Marty Tripes. The 500cc Support class was taken by Gary Chaplin (Ma i) wi th Wyman Priddy second on a CZ. Chuck Palmgren (Ya m) was th e win ner of th e AMA Gran d Na tio nal Championship Ser ies ha lf mile held a t Roosevelt Raceway in Long Island, NY. Palmgren led early, the n diced a t the midway p oin t with Larry Darr (H -D), who eventually fell back to finish fourth. Harley-Davi dson riders Mert Lawwill and Mark Brelsford pticked up th e pace to finish second and third. BSA-m o u nted Jim Rawls took the Junior win. Sixteen- year-old Tom Brooks (DKW) con tin ued h is hot strea k in the desert, winning on both sides o f the Cactus Cats/Masterlinks Dual European Scrambles. Brooks' victorie s came in the Lightweight Di vision II class. In the Heavyweight Expert ranks, J.N. Roberts (Hus ) won one and had troubles in the other , which went to Gene Cannady (Yam ). ,c~ Arizonan David Lasch (Ya m) won the opening race of the new DeAnza Cycle Park in southern California, besting Rick Lee in th e 250cc Expert class. Rick Burgett took a pair of CZs to victories in the 250 and 500cc Expert classes in a Eugene, OR, motocross. Randy Limbeck fini sh ed second in the 250s while Bo Hart occupied that position in th e 500s. Those making th e to p th ree positions in their classes at the fourth annual Mini TT Championship at Saddleback Park included: Warren Reid, Pam Bennett, Shawn Moran, Randy Mamola,Jim Tarantino, Todd Peterson, Wayne Rainey, Jeff Ward, Terri McQueen (Steve's daughter), Chad McQueen (Steve's son ), Mike Brown, Mike Minnig, and Sterling Cogar. Tim Hart (Mai ) re tu rn ed from a sojourn to Lions Drag Strip with the top prizes from bo th the 250 and 500cc Expert classes of a CMC motocross there. Bob Hershey (CZ) finished runner-up bo th times. Pentonmounted Chuck Bower won th e 125cc Expert bash. Rick Hocking (Yam ) too k a devastating win in th e 250cc Expert class of a scrambles held at nort h ern California 's Fremon t Racewa y. Alex Jorgensen (Kaw) fin ish ed second. H a ving a rider named DeSoto taking two Expert classes at a motocross would not be a surprise. But a t Indian Dunes, it was Ron DeSo to winning the 250 an d 500cc Expe rt classes.
