Late Sunday' afternoon. an auto/train accident claimed the lives of Suzuki mini motocrossers Bruce Bunch and Kyle Fleming. who were declared dead at the scene. Rick Hemme and the driver. Dana Duke of Oakley Goggles. are in critical-serious condition at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Hemme had just won the 106cc championship in the fourday race. The NMRA drag racing series moves to northern California for the Aug. 7-8 Godlen State Nationals at Baylands Raceway, located at 44333 Christy Lane in Fremont. Terry Vance will resume his search for 200 mph, Russ Collins should be there to continue the development on the Battlestar, as .well as a full compliment of drag racing action. Also appearing will be Evel Knievel , Jr. , following his father's footsteps with a variety of stunts and a ramp to ramp jump. He will perform on Sunday afternoon. Freddie Spencer (Hon) took second with Graeme Crosby (Yam) third. Randy Mamola (Suz) finished fifth. Kenny Roberts (Yam) crashed in the first corner at the start of the race. He sustained hand injuries and road rash. The point standings with three rounds to go show Uncini leading with 103 points followed by Roberts and Sheene at 68. Spencer at 67 and Crosby at 66. ' Brad Lackey, vying to become the , first American to win the 500cc MX World Championship, saw h is lead in the point standings shrink after the August I Belg ian round. Lackey (Suz) put together 2-4 moto finishes for third overall. Title contender Andre Vromans (Suz) collected the overall win with a 1-2 tally followed by Graham Noyce (Hon) wi th a 3-1. Gary Semics (Hon) took a 6-DNF. Lackey goes into the August 8 final round in Luxembourg leading Vro• mans 206 points 10 202. Eric Geboers (Suz) clinched the 126cc MX World Championship title at the August 1 round in Sweden. Geboers took the overall win with a 2-1 tally over Corrado Maddii's (Gil) 1-3. Michael Rinaldi , (Gil) posted a 3-2 tally for third. Barry Sheene was in vo lved in a high speed crash with a fallen rider during an open practice session for th e Silverstone GP on July 28. He sustained compound fractures of both lower legs which required the use of 26 screws to set. In addition, he sustained a broken wrist. Sheene was having a test session on the Yamaha V-4. ~ The Silverstone GP will be shown on NBC-TV on October 30. Check your local listings. HosPITal STOP: , Honda's Doug Domokos, the Wheelie King, is in St. J oseph's Hospital in Orange, CA; following two hours of surgery Saturday night, July 31, for th ird degree burns on his right foot. The second race of the three-race Coppa Mille Dollari MX Series in Italy, took place in Apiro on July 25. Yamaha-mounted Franco Picco took all three rnotos, but American Carlos Serrano ran as high as second before water from the deluged track worked its way into theairbox of his Beta and , forced him back. Serrano still finished fifth overall. Word from Europe is that Kenny Roberts underwent surgery on the little finger of his right hand on Monday. Aug. 1. Following a oneday stay in the hospital. The 500-ca'mper limit imposed by the California Coastal Commission on Pismo Beach has been delayed until Sept. 15, allowing a full crowd for the Labor Day weekend. ' Even though there was tragedy at Ponca City, there was also the best week of racing the NMA Grand National Championship has ever seen over 2000 riders put on the show. Kawasaki's Paul Denis took the 83cc Stock and Modified Expert classes. Rick Hemme put his Suzuki in the winner's circle of the 105cc 12 and over class while Lowell Thomson took that class for the younger riders. Ron Lechien (Yam ) was unstoppable in the 125cc Stock class and Billy Liles (Kaw) took the Modifieds. Liles also took the 250cc class.
