Robbie Nolin (Yam) fini shed a hard th ird ahead of Mike Fisher (H on) and Scott Sargent (Suz). Little known rider Fi sh er took moto two with Burnworth hot on his trac ks. Burnworth 's 1-2 score ga ve hi m th e overall with Fisher second. Third overall went to Nolin (3-3). In th e 250cc Pro class, 20 entran ts lined up to battle on th e su per dusty track. Mike Tri pes (H us) and Juan Benavidez (Yam) h it th e first turn a nd the race was on. Bena videz out la sted Tri pes for the rn o to win wi th Ba ker third. Fo ll owing Baker were Mike Shoema ker (Hon) ,-Mark Howell (Hon) and Woody Carlso n (Yam). Baker put th e br ak es on the competition in mo to two by winning with little trou ble. Matt Tedder (Hon ), who finished a distant ninth in moto one, pushed Bak er for severa l la ps but could not overcome the fleei ng Baker. Ba ker (3-1) took the ove rall, follo wed by Tedder (9-2), Howell (56) an d Tripes.Another decent turnout was in the Open Pro class. Burn wort h was ted little time winning both motos wi th T edder taking a back seat both rounds. Two for one night at Corona MX By Kit Palmer CO RONA, CA, JULY 23 It was " Buddy N ite" this eve- ning at Coro na Raceway, wh ere two riders were a ble to race for the price of one. And, by p roof of th e large turnout, many riders knew when to take advantage of a grea t deal when they saw one. This special night was made possible by Sun West Cycles a nd Yamaha of Corona . A total of 19 riders ca m paigned in the 250cc Novice class. Todd J ohn son (Ya m ) bl itzed to the front of the pack at the start of moto one na rrowly a hea d of Dean Morgan (Suz), Bru ce Criswell (Hon), Dan Lamy ' (Hon) a nd Steve Lamy (Yam). With in a few laps Johnson managed to stretch his advantage to a comforta ble, but cautio us lead. However, Steve Lamy wa s on th e warpath as he passed Dan m idwa y through the rnoto, the n Mo rgan with only two laps to go . Steve the n set after the leader, but time ran out and Johnson took j h e ch eckered flag first. Morgan held on to third while Criswell and Ben Collar (Hon) settled for fourth and fifth . . When the gate dropped for the start of the second rnoto, H onda-m ounted • Joe Hamilton roosted h is way to th e front while Morgan, Larry Cravens (Suz), Steve Lamy and Johnson pursued. Lamy made the first move when he darted past both Cravens a nd Morgan. Then, with only one lap remaining, Lamy shoved his way around Hamilton to overtake the lead. Mabery paces CRe night minicross By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA , JULY 23 Mini madness ruled supreme at the California Racing Club's Friday night Mini MX at In dian Dunes. The 80cc Novice class saw Jeff Mabery, aboard a Kawasaki sponsored by PJl , take command ea rly in the first moto and also reign over the Intermediates, who shared the track. Mabery lost no time in buildi n g a siza ble lead and lea fro m wire to wi re. Beh in d him was a wheel-to-wheel d ice for second bet ween Su zuk i of Van Nu ys' Scott Mich aels a nd Su nshi ne Yamaha's Pa ul Matth ews. T hese two chased each other fro m o ne end of the track to the ot her wi th Michaels taki ng seco nd by moto's end, a head of Tony Fleming, Matthews and Edd ie Mercado. T h e second blast off the line found Mercado in front of Ma be ry an d Mic hae ls. Ma bery lost no tim e in taking the lead, holdi ng Michaels to " second a nd Ma tthews to third.
