Times sports reporter Shav Glick totally ignored the accomplishments of two young California motocross stars and submitted a story for publication that could have been written by the public re la tions department o f th e free spendi ng monolith of motorcycling, Hond a Motor Co mpany. The Superbowl o f Motocross, run Saturday n ight at the L.A. Coliseum, was the supposed event he was covering, b ut Mike Bell , who won the race with a convincing lead was barely mentioned in the article. Second place rider Bro c G lover also far outclassed the competition in the final eve nt after winning his heat race earlier in the evening by the widest margin of the night and didn't even get mentioned. Bell and Glover ride fo r Team Yamaha, H o nda 's major competitor in the American motorcycle market. The num bers tell the story. Six Honda riders mentioned, two from Yamaha and one apiece from Suzuki and Kawasaki, the other major factory teams. It must be supposed that Mr. Glick felt it was more important to stroke Honda, who was one of the event's sponsors, tha n to report on the race itself. Or possibly he was too busy being stroked by them to even bo th er watching the race. In the future we hope Mr. Glick will do us all a favor and either cover the event he is attending or just stay home and forget it. PAT MU RPHY Long Beach, CA Sponsor correction I would like to make a correction to your AFM Six- Hour story of last issue. , , John Wells and Larry Theobald are not sponsored by Team H ype rcycle as reported but receive help from H o nda of G ardena , EBC Brake Pads, G ra yd on Lrd., and, Nippondenso Spark Pl ugs. ' .I would li ke to tak e this opportunity to thank eac h o f these sponsors as well as the fa ntastic pit crew tha t go t o u r machine back in the race after I cras he d. Special thanks must also go to Tom Parker, the service manager at Honda of Gardena, who bui lt one hell of an engine for us. Weare currently working on a new machine for other endurance races so keep your eyes open, you' ll be h ea ring more fro m WLT Raci ng! . LARRY T H EO BAL D G arden a , CA Sister Shu's sledge Gosh, wi th th e interview on Darrell ' (Shultz) a nd with his modest answers, ant: 'm ig h t begi n to thin k that he is j ust fu ll of good, clean fun and handles being at the top very well. And. if yo u rea d between the lines, you can see that Darrell " will put the story out fro nt a nd fill you in o n any ho t news" because the Shu ca n ha ndle publicity and doesn ' t re ly o n " uh, duh" like many interviewees do (too many); you know, your basic up front guy, or in his words .... .1 can adapt rea ll y well to any situa tion. " Boy, I'll say. H e sure handles fame and success better than A. Gates handles obscurity and envy. I really lik e the good samari tan part, where h e took the Australians out for steak dinner. O r how about when he lent 500 buc ks to a g uy in Atlanta. Oh , but the clincher phrase is " w ha t good is life if you can't enjoy it with your family?" Golly, what a swell kind of guy. R ea ll y now, a guy who likes his family, treats his friends wefl, and is open and generous, too? Ludicrous! Must be a publicity p loy. As evidenced by A. Gates, such people really don't exist. Hey, but what do I know? I' m just another kid from Sacramento that doesn't know the d ifference between a "Honda- red Porsch e" and " just another shiny car," although I h a ve known this Darr ell g u y perso nally for q u ite a while. "Actually, he's been pretty square with me - o h, like sendi ng m e m o n ey to he lp with school, or buying me a ho rse I wanted, j u st for ge neral p rinci p les, a nd all th e. advice a nd encourage ment he's g iven me whe n I really needed it.
