iron-clad grip that water-cooled two;
strokes have on AMA Formula Two.
C\f
Bickel took the lead with a hole00 shot that kept his Can-Am wheelie0') ing all the way to turn one. McAvoy
....-4
did all he could to keep his Honda,
.. that was down on power and up on
00 weight, within striking range. The
C\f pair immediately pulled out on the
~ rest of the pack, led by Jeff Brandt.
...... McAvoy, studying Bickel for a weak
point to capitalize on, was never
~ more than couple bikelengths behind
Bickel.
McAvoy said later, "Kurt and I
have a different style of racing. I
brake late and try to maintain as
much speed as possible through the
turn. Kurt brakes earlier than me, but
he gets a real good shot out of the
turn."
McAvoy took a chance at the entrance to tum four, a downhill offcamber tum. He held off his braking
to the last possible instant and grabbed
the inside line on Bickel. McAvoy
held off Bickel's charge on the exit
and made it stick for the remainder of
the race.
The Formula Two race once again
proved that the formula to win races
is 90 per cent rider and 10 per cent
machine. Kevin Peltz broke his GS750
superbike in practice. He borrowed a
Can-Am 500 single to compete and
get whatever points he could. He
ended up winning ahead of John
Robertson on his Pre-Grid/Cycle
Center Honda 750F, Tim O'Hara on
his self-sponsored TZ375 and Frank
Nellis on his Campbell MCA Suzuki
GS750.

In sharp -co n tr ast to the roar and
thunder of the Formula races is the
hush of Open Stock Production (the
Vacuum Cleaner 500). The EPA standards have made stock bikes so quiet
that the rush of wind as they go by
makes more noise than the engine.
Terry Statum took the early lead Iollowed byDan Hart, Mike Kauzlarich
and Darrell White. White immediately
started working his way into the lead,
passing Kauzlarich on the second lap
and Hart on the fourth lap...just in
time to inherit the lead when Statum
pulled off, out of gas.
But a similar fate was destined for
White and his Cycle Connection Kawasaki. The following lap White slowed,
allowing Hart to take the lead.
Finally, White pulled off with a blown
main fuse. This left Hart and Kauzlarich to battle it out. The race ended
with Hart winning on his Salinas
Kawasaki GPzIIOO followed by Mike
Kauzlarich on his San Francisco
HondalSuzuki GSllOOandNick Nicholson on his 900 Honda.
