Gene Baldwin took that victory, but Canoy was not through for the day. He returned in the Stock class to take the winning honors. Canoy is a consistent rider under the lights at OCIRbut is quite a daytime racer as well. He proved this as he took the lead in the opening rnoto ofthe Modified race. Rincon Kawasaki rider Ron West was right behind him and waiting for Canoy to make a bad mistake. Canoy made no mistakes, but his engine did let him down and seized up. West was presented with the lead position at this point with Eric Wierman taking second over Terry Szucsco and Gene Baldwin. In the second moto Canoy was having a hot battle with Kawasakimounted Sean Delvenne. Canoy made the pass in a corner only to pull off the track just past the score tower whoops. Yes, his bike seized again. Baldwin controlled the lead with Chris Lara and Delvenne running behind him. Szucsco was second overall ahead of Wierman and West. Delvenne experienced problems also as he fell and got his foot caught in his swingarm. Team Honda is coming on strong for this summer's racing, and they are out to 'take the wins at Ponca City. Mouse McCoy raced today on a prototype water-cooled 80. Ronnie Densford was just signed up to race in both the 60 and 80cc classes on a red machine along with Jason " C-Show" Collier. This year' s course consisted of seven 16-mile loops through some of central Nevada 's most scenic areas. As always, a large portion of the course was run in, and through , water. This year, however, unseasonable rains had rais ed the level of the creek that the race takes its name from to unexpected levels. The end results of this higher water level meant that anyone who sluffed off on their waterproofing was in big trouble! The riders were gridded on one of the cit y streets in rows of five, one row to depart every 15 seconds, starting with the Experts, until all riders were on the course. The course then made a 90 degree right onto another street, only a quarter of a block from the start just to keep the kamakaze troops somewhat under control. From there it was a straight shot out of town and into the first of many water crossings. Coming in off the first lap, Nevada 's ISDE competitor Jack Johnson was the first rider through the check. Hot on his tail was Delta, Utah's favorite son, Kevin Jones. Behind Kevin was southern Nevada's hot new 125cc rider Billy Hill. Anthony Pasqualotto was next through the check , with Bobby Davidson running in fifth . On the second lap, Jones moved into first place with Pasqualotto following and Johnson in third. Young Mr. Hill was now in fourth with Davidson maintaining fifth. On lap three, Pasqualotto made his move and occupied the first place position and held it for the rest of the race. 'T h is' moved Jones back to second and Billy Hill into third. Meanwhile, Jack Johnson was experiencing the first of many minor difficulties that would eventually move him back out of the winner's circle. A broken chain cost him about 12 minutes. That brought Craig Mojeske .of Las Vegas into a brief moment of glory when he occupied fourth for that lap. Also, Kent Miller of Scotsdale, AZ, got by Davidson on this lap and temporarily took fifth place 'away from the consistent running Davidson. On lap four, Pasqualotto was still in first with Jones in second and Hill ~ ... I : "_.' ~ • • _ .. _ . ~ .. . ~ I • t ... _ . . . .. ,,, .. _ _ in third. Johnson, recovering from his lost time with the broken chain, was making a determined charge to occupy the fourth slot. Meanwhile, Davidson had gotten by Miller to retake fifth spot. When they came'through the check on lap five, Pasqualotto was still leading with Jones providing incentive in second. Also, Davidson had made his move and passed Hill to take over third. On lap six things stayed pretty much the same with the exception of the now hard-charging Davidson. Demonstrating the benefits of pacing himself earlier in the race, Davidson now passed Jones to take over the number two spot. At the checkered flag it was Pasqualotto first with an elapsed time of four hours, 11minutes and 59 seconds. . Davidson cruised on in about five minutes after that with Jones running approximately three minutes behind him. Next up was Billy Hill taking a fourth overall on a 125. "Kool Kev" Welch was the last rider in the top five. That made the final line-up Pasqualouo first overall and first Open Expert, with Davidson "second overall and first 250cc Expert. Next up was Kevin Jones with a third overall and second 250cc Expert. Billy Hill was the next winner with a first 125cc Expert win and a fourth overall . Fifth overall and second Open Expert was Kevin Welch . In the Class 30 ranks, Baja competitor Casey Folks was the victor and the Class 38 winner was John Etchart of Hemet, CA. With a finisher percentage of only 59 per cent, just getting a finisher pin was an accomplishment. Congratulations fellas, you all done good!
