The meeting started badly for Sigalos when he forgot to turn h is fue l ta p on in his first heat and wo und u p last, Pen ha ll won h is firs t h eat while Kell y Mora n finishe d seco nd in h is first race, behind Australia 's Bill y , Sa nders, but in from o f Kenny Ca rter. Shawn Moran also too k a seco nd his first time out, behind Englishma n Les Collins. Pen h a ll went on to record two more race wins a nd a second place when he was beaten by the mee ting's winner Jessup in race 10. After th ree rides Penhall was assured of q uali fying for the next round in Sweden. It was a littl e harder for the other three Americans as only Kel ly Moran showed any consistency. Following the two points from his first ride, he went on the finish third in his next two heats; races that he shou ld ha ve grabbed at least o ne more point fro m . , That left Kelly with four points from three rides, and he desperately needed to win his fourth ride to take the pressure off him in eveml9. But he gated badly and had-to be content with second behind Jessup. Kelly's brother Shawn had a very bad second ride when he finished last after getting a poor stan. His third Three Americans advance admidst controuersy By John Hipkiss L O NDO N, ENGLAND, JULY 4 Americans Bruce Penhall, Dennis ' Sigalos and Kelly Moran kept their hopes,of making thefield in the World Speedway Final alive by advancing out of the Overseas Fin al ' at White City. T h e fo urth America n competing there, Shawn Moran, is not out of it either, and will enter the J ul y 23 Inter- 20 Continental Final as a reserve. The top 11 riders from the Inter-Continental Final will advance to the World Final at the Los Angeles Coliseum Aug. 28. The Americans, particularly Penhall, were the center of controversy near the end of the race. Event 19, the second to last race, pitted all four U.S. riders. Penhall came into the event wi th II points and a shot at the overall win, while his countrymen were in desparate need of points to make the cut. Penhall threw away the chance at the $1800 winner's check and ran a slow fourth, picking up no more points, That gave the win to England's Dave Jessup and second to another Brito n , Kenny Caner. Penhall finished third overall. Sigalos needed to win the race, and he did, ' leaving Kelly ' and Shawn . Moran to fight it out for second, with Kelly taking theposition. Penhall's actions meant that all four Americans still have a chance to make the ยท World Final. It also meant that Penhall, the crowd favorite at last year's World Championship at Wembley Stadium, faced the noisiest-ever barrage of abuse and anger from the packed crowd of Disappointment in Ivan Mauger's face after failing to qualify. ride p roduced o ne p oin t whe n he fi nishe d behind Kenny Ca rter and Iva n Mauger. T h a t put Sha wn in with three points in th ree ri des, and facing a do-or-die situa tio n in h is fourth race. He responded well, beating Cris Morton, Bill y Sanders and Alan Grahame to go into the final race with six poin ts, Sigalos had reason to be a n noyed with himself - after forgetting to turn on the fu el in his first race, he went out a nd won his seco nd o ver Iva n Mauger (who failed to qualify and now officially retires from in ter national competition). Then in his third heat, a race where he should have gained a couple of points, he' finis hed a poor last and was annoyed with himself when he returned to the pits. He had a difficult race the fou rt h time out, finishing second to Carter,
