Greg Teague and Clayton Hull put on a show of shows in the 60cc National. Greg led until the last comer when Clayton found the power " t o get by. The fans hadn't had a chance to sit down when out came the 125cc National for a repeat of the first race, Fast Willie McCoy led until the last lap when Jimmy Thompson blasted by to win. Trace Polson on a lone 80 was right in the middle of things but had to settle back as the bigger bikes outpowered him. Hard riding Billy Orr had a real battIe going in the 250cc Expert National. Orr, Odel Davis and Shon Stoval came off the line side by side and stayed that way for two, laps before getting away from each other and.finishing in that order. The 750cc National lined up as spectators crowded the fence to watch them throw dirt at them. Tubby Dotson, Jeff Clarkson and Jimmy Tarlton did just that. Clarkson led a while then Dotson led until the last lap. From out of the pack came Tarlton on the outside, full bore on a 750 to take the win. Results SHORT TRACK 60: 1. Clayton Hull (Yam); 2. Kelly caps sizzling weekend at ·M anning MX By Eric Raits MANNING CANYON, UT,jUNE27 Expert Mike Kelly added a first Open and second 250 finish at Manning Cycle Park today to a first Open placing the day be- ... "" 34 fore at Delta for a weather-matching performance. Terry McGinnis beat Kelly in the second 250cc Expert moto for first overall, spoiling Kelly's bid for a pair of wins. Scott Nielson hung doggedly to fourth with a flat rear tire to capture third overall. The 250cc Novices had a horrible time. Randy Woodard and Verle Bybee won a moto apiece but couldn't place high enough to get into the top three overall. A sixth and fourth was good enough to put Gordon Goodale in first, just ahead of Alan Walker's fourth and seventh. Gary Harr took third with a fifth and ninth. Shawn Gerber and Bob Campbell each had a first and second in 250cc Amateur, Gerber taking first overall with the better tie-breaking performance in the second moto. Bear Hensley looked strong with a pair of wins in 125cc Expert! acin g to beat out Gordon Brown and Wade Park. Roger Braithwaite was in the running until he fell and went home with a leg injury. Troy Lerwill also scored a SuntanaManning double with wins in the 80cc Expert class, beating Curtis Kelly and the hot Chad Bangerter. Bangerter won yesterday at Delta and here today in the I25cc Amateurs, spending most of the time out front. Results MINI : 1. Ryan Whitehouse (Yam); 2. Zeppelin Tit tenson (Suz); 3. Bishop BOYD, TX, JUNE 27 Shon Stovall rode a hard fought battle today to take the gold at Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway. At the drop of starter Phil Dyson's green flag, the 250cc Professional short trackers flew into turn one three abreast. Gary Kidd, riding brother Mike's number one Honda, was out on the back straight first with Shon Stovall and Duane Duvall side by side pursuing Gary's back wheel. This nip-and-tuck battle continued until lap three when Shon grabbed the lead and began to put some da ylight between his back wheel and Kidd's. Gary had his hands full as he was trying to keep Duane Duvall at ba y. Duane's brother Greg was waiting in fourth place for anyone to make a slip. At the checkered flag, a proud Stovll had taken his first-ever professional short track first place. At the other end of the displacement scale, the race wtih the mo st excitement was the 80cc short trackers. _ As a herd of miniature motorcycle dove into turn one, Jimmy Thompson went down and was centerpunched by Kregg Bentley who highsided. An unidentified rider tried to avoid the downed riders but ran over Thompson, got airborne and performed the very rare graceful get-off, the spread-armed, kick-off-the-motorcycle-to-the-rear back-flip. After (he red flag was thrown and the dust settled, Clayton Hull, winner of the 60cc short track event, was taken to the hospitalfor ~ cut requir- ing sti tches . The unidentified rider, bruised and winded, elected not to restart. Thompson limped back to his motorcycle and prepared for the restart. Out onto the back straight after the restart, Trace Polson was in the lead with Shane Jolly and Thompson right behind. Hard charging Jimmy took over first place on the third lap with Trace falling back to third behind Jolly. With the final lap remaining, the lead changed again with Jolly taking first, Thompson and Polson finishing in second and third positions. The major upset of the day was in the Open Pro TT. After finishing second in his heat, Rusty Pattillo jumped out in first place in the final. With a battle royale ta king place behind him, Rusty proceeded to put distance on the entire pack of thundering motorcycles. With a comfortable straightaway length lead , the gremlins showed up; Rusty's Honda coughed, bogged and died in turn three of lap four. In th e blink of an eye, Michael Martin, Ed Cook and Gary Kidd blew by Rusty as he continued to attempt to start the stubborn motorcycle. ' As Scott Crews came sailin g over th e Astrodome-styled jump and headed down into turn three, Rusty's Honda ca me to life . H e accelerated out of turn three, over the second jump, and passed Scott 'Crews in mid-air to regain fourth position. Wrought with frustration, Rusty held it WFO to reel in and fly by Kidd to catch up to the third slot. As Rusty continued to gain on the leaders, the laps ran out. The checkered flag fell for Martin, Cook and Pattillo in that order. Results SHORT TRACK 60 : 1. Clayton Hull; 2. Greg Teague; 3. Trace Polson. BO 1. Shane Jolly; 2. Jimmy Thompson; 3. Brand, Rakestraw, Rhoten score at Wolfcreek MX By Charlle WI"ese , RIO VISTA, TX, JUNE 27 Wolfcreek MX was ' the site of et th . ti S d f Y ano er eXCI mg un ay 0 racing as Btick and Company put the big bucks on the line. 125ccExpert action got started with a familiar face out front , the " New" Mel Newman (Hon). Newman, aboard a new LCS red rocket, set a very quick pace as Dennis Brand took notes in second. Newman was fast but unable to pull away as Brand shadowed him th roug h out round one while they pulled away from Jerry "Super" S r be (H ) l:I ,~ , ?n "an.d a h ar d charzi argmg Kirk D Ville Dillon (Hon). Round two had Brand on top and • • Newman .c~~~ m~ .. . WIth - .. dust. ' " ... Brand . ~ ' ~ ... schooled on th e lin es of Newman along with Brand's rocket-like Honda, Newman just couldn't find the ex tra needed to slip past. Ten laps later, Brand took the checkers as Newman held off Dillon for second in the wave of red. Fourth in round two was Kawasaki of Ft. Worth's "Texas Tough" Terry Tinney. Lately, the 250cc Expert class has been anything but a runaway; however in round one that is exactly what Mark Rakestraw managed to do. Rakestraw grabbed the holeshot, and it was a good thing; when the field reached turn two, a pile-up occurred involving three of the top contenders, two of which bounced back, one of which did not. Davey "Boner" jones' (H us) day ended in turn two with rna nag led machinery as Darren Rhoten and Nick "The Stick" Cordova (Hon) remounted in search of the fast lane. Rakestraw continued unmolested to take round one honors as early, threat Dennis "Skylab" Hawthorne (H us ) landed in second ahead of Kirk " T he Doughboy" Spencer (Ya m ), Tony " Nitro " Neilsen (Ya m), T err y Tinney, jimmy Neil (Suz ) and Rhoten. Round two began with Rhoten roosting out front. Rhoten, slowed in round one with bent bars, made his move early in round two . As the field sped around the fast , sweeping, righthand first turn, th e "Money Man " .- started counting, and 10 grueling laps later he stood at the head of the pay line. Rhoten appeared to be taking out his round one frustrations on the track like a wrongfully accused prisoner. Rakestraw tried in vain to recover his round one top seat while holding off another recovery rider, Cordova, who piloted his Trail West mount to third ahead of Hawthorne, Neil and Tinney. Open Expert action was Cordova's chance to earn a day 's pay after having problems in 250cc wars. Cordova boogied past early leader Dennis Hawthorne at the halfway mark as if his race strategy was to wait until the halfway mark, then pass Hawthorne. Cordova conti ned as he took the round one win while Rhoten came from behind to finish second ahead of Hawthorne, Spencer, "Gassin ' Glen" Goodier (Hon) and "Tall" Randall Tarter (Mai). Round two looked like a repeat of 250cc Expert round two as Rhoten made winning appear easy aboard the WRW YZ. Cordova failed to finish round two while Hawthorne came back for second ahead of Goodier and Spencer. • Results MICRO MINI : 1. Steve Hogg (Yam); 2. Eric Alstrin (Yam); 3, Dwain Carter (Yam).
