Howard gets big money action at Westwood RR By Alice Macpherson WESTWO O D, BR IT ISH CO LUMBIA, CANADA, J U NE 27 Adversity has always been considered the ultima te test of a person's mettle. Every racer who falls down will usually try to get , Doug Chandler (8 ), here leading Rocky Robinson (64) and Chris Ca rr, won three classes at Baylands. Campbell double demolishes Sunny Valley ST .By Clay Light SUNNY VALLEY, OR, JULY 3 , Jeff Ca mpbell once again dealt a blow a t Sunny Valley Raceway with his demolishing wins at tonight's short track event, taking the 250cc A and Pro Money main events by marginal leads in both races. Robert Jokela (Hon of Grants Pass) took the Open A main. This time the weather held up; as you may recall, last race was nothing short of disaster, weather-wise, but this time superb. Jeff Harsha (Yam of Medford) moved to the front of the Pro Money B main and fled quickly away to the flag to place himself in the A main as did Open B main winner Steve Hill (Fresno Hon). The 125ccA main saw two restarts, but once underway, Clay Ligh t (LOP/ Super Seer /Bosch/ Ya m Sports Ctr.) put his Richard Earle-tuned YZ into the lead in turn one. David Woolard (Suz) worked by as did Charlie Mit chell (Shoei/Harry Lillie Yam) and Rod Bixel (Suz) , Woolard and Bixel banged bars throughout the entire lO-lap main event with Woolard com- , ing out on top. Mitchell was third, Light fourth, Brian R iley (Hon) fifth. The 250cc A main was a familiar sight to spectators and riders alike. Campbell collected scratch honors on his Suzuki with Terry Phillips (H -D)and Mitchell in tow . Campbell put the pack to his mercy with a demolishing lead, which set up a battle for second between Phillips, Wayne Shermerhorn (C-A) and Mitchell, who began to fade . P h ill ips and Shermerhorn gave the spectators a down -tothe-wire dice as Campbell wheelied across the line to victory. Phillips took second by a miniscule amount over Shermerhorn, Mi tchell and Hill (Fresno Hon/Kaw). Robert J okela (Hon) launched off the line at the start of th e Open A main even t followed closely by Dave Whi ti n g (D&V/ Ya m Sports C tr. ), Shermer h orn and Brett Howard (Hon). Wh iting was taking the outsid e and J okela the low line in their fight to the flag. Jokela stuffed a wheel's length win into the bag over Whiting, who has come on strong as of late. Shermerhorn put his Honda single across for third, Howard fourth and Hill fifth. The Lightweight Money main had Bixel and Light 1-2 off the line on their water-pumpers with Mitchell and Woolard in tow. Bixel was out for the big loot ana wanted the win badly. Mitchell and Light motored in third and fourth, which were the final ' money spots. Bixel took the majority of the payoff with second money to Woolard. The Pro Money main event had Campbell's red 750 Triumph light off the line with another devastating scratch. Whiting, Howard and Jokela were not going to let the AMA veteran off the hook that easy and hounded from behind. Whiting was to be his closest competition of the night, although a few bikelengths back of the National speedster. Third went to Howard who held Jokela, Klu m , Harsha and Phillips off to take final money spot. Results MI NI A: 1. Kenny Craig (Yam); 2. Jas on M athew (Yam); 3. M ikey Frampto n (Suz). 80 A: 1. Chandler triples at Baylands ST By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, JUNE 24 In the fast flyin g world of motorcycling, only a young and talented type kid like Doug C h a ndl er cou ld take what comes in stride as fast as it does . The AMA, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to a llow a Novice graded P ro to ju m p from his class to the Jun ior ranks wi th six months in grade and h is poin ts. Vio la, Chandler did just that, staying off the western tour for two weeks, getting a license and not taking an eastern tour, but still winning on the vastly improved Baylands Raceway high-banked th reeeigh ths-m ile, in all classes attempted. Rocky Ro binson took the start o f the 15-lap 250cc Expert show on the Maxima/CE Yamaha with Joe Knight tucked in and Chandler last. Robin son held the point down the front straight with Chris Carr taki ng over ' second over the rapidly advancing . Chandler and Knight. On th e fifth lap, Chandler found the way aro un d with Robinson, Knight and Eddie Caballero in tow and Carr on the sidelines with a seized motor. It was a parade from that point with C handler stretching the point, drastically. Billy Gonzales swapped the lead with Mark Steinke in the 360cc Novice sh ow until Steinke swapped ends. Mark was the standout of the night riding the Bob Scally Bultaco of old and Porky Perez's leathers of very old with Dick Steinke overseeing th e operation that he watched built originally in 1970, with yours truly. Chris Paulson has been impressing most everyone with his return to the racing bit and got yet another win in the 360cc Expert class over Joey Knight and Errol Longboya. Chris only wishes there were some Pro races close by, like here. Kevin Hugill was the first one with th e clutch out in the Open Expert show, but Chandler gobbled him u p rather quickly and went off to hide o n the Bill Campbell-prepped XR. Hugill was replaced by the very aggr essive Steve Carrillo who looks bet ter withevery race, just like he used to , a nd Hugill took third over John Taylor, Ken Netto and Chuck Gondala, back with the Ra ncho boys. . A return for the King of the Bay had Wade Boyd road race it into first for the big money, bu t Doug took command once again on his watercooled Jerry Griffith-built CR250 R. Joe -Kn igh t held second over Chris Pau lson until the bakery special went south, and thi rd money went to Eddie Caballero o n the Dirt Works special. Results MIN I: 1. Kelley Fischer (Yam); 2. Steve Raymond (Kaw ). PEEWEE: 1. Jason Sm ith (Hon); 2. Scott Corsetti (Yam ); 3. Je rry Davis (Yam). 250 NOV : 1. Ted Taylor (Hon); 2. Rick Lovitt (H- D); 3. Roll en Eskew (Kaw) . u p a nd rej oin the fray. Not only did Rh ys Howard do .tha t after a corner three melee in the 250cc GP class at the $10,000 Western Canadian Challenge race, but he also took off an d made it to a decisive first, lappi ng the maj ority of the field twice after the crash. This incident clearly demo nstrated that he does n't have to starr first to finish first. Until H o ward took over first, there was a fine scrap between Dar yl Cornwell a nd J a mes Fahey which finall y resolved to second and thi rd, respectively. For the dura tion of th is 50miler, the rest of the fiel d was q uite strung out, but a flas h of brilliance on the last lap clinched eighth for Derek P ort er as h e dropped his lap time by three seconds. . . Several riders ra n 250cc GP an d Superbike bac k to back. Two 50-mil e events with 10 minutes in between is a difficu lt exercise even if you don't change machines. Here Rhys H oward again proved that h is is a risi n g star. Wi thin the firs t eight la ps he had established a lead on his Lawson Rep lica Kawasaki and hel d it to the end. While this can make for dull watching in some cases, his style of riding certainly won hi m fans, and the victory lap was deafening with cheers and yelling. Ea r ly leader Bla ke Seale was overtaken by Bria n Sutton, wh o in tu rn moved down whe n Howard moved up. H owever, Sutton maintained tha t second place on his hot H onda fol lowed at a distance by Gary G ood fellow a nd h is Vancouver Suzuki -sponsored Ka tan a. T his is one ri der who is sure o f h is sponsor - he owns th e shop. Following fourth p la ce Ken Hague was the new XV920-based endurance racer of Bob Work, pi lo ted by Ala n Seddon. Jones jets to Mammoth Vet win By Debbie Matthews MAMMOTH, CA, JU N E 27 The peace of Mammoth Mountain was broken earl y th is morning by the roar of machinery as 50 Vets lined u p to do battle.
