Trinon Cirello . e Bast takes Cost a M esa Derby Nig ht By Gary Hoffma n COST A MESA, CA, JULY 9 Racing was super hot tonight at the O range County Fairgro u n d , as Sha w n Moran sh owed up for a spectacu lar evening of championship style Scratch raci ng in front of over 8000 fans on Fair Derby Night. Michael Bast and Moran were both tied with perfect rides in all p rior races till event nu mber 15whe n Moran slip ped up in turn two and caused Joh n Sandona to go down , elim inating Moran from that event. Winning event 18 assured Ala n Christian of a t least second pl ace, depending upon Bast's performance in th e final hea t. Event 20 match ed Moran, Bast, Du bb Ferr ell and Dave Sim s, a ll excellen t Scratch riders. Bast needed no less than second place to assure hi m self th e ch a m p io n sh ip, and Mora n needed a win for third. Alan Christian was definitely roo ting for everyone but Bast. The gate flew up, and Mora n was out first like a jet, with Bas t not far beh ind. Michael, bein g no foo l, rode a clean , easy race behind Shawn , takin g second in th e event, and for the first time in 15 years of raci ng, with 14 points, won Derby Nigh t a t Costa Mesa. Christian p laced second with 13 points, and Moran, missing one ent ire event, placed th ird with 12 point s. As tradition has it at Cos ta Mesa, Derby Night mea ns donkey races, as several of the top riders, along with infield announcer Margo Sandona, tested their riding skills. Margo led the pack into turn two when she slipped off and was nearl y tra mpled. But troo per tha t sh e is, not to mention crazy, she got back on and surged a head to take th e checkered, squeezing byMike Faria at the las t moment. Well, that 's racing. No speedway a t Costa Mesa J uly 16, but the foll owing week is " Fan Appreciation Nigh t" so do n' t miss it ! • Result s FINAL POINT STANDINGS: 1. M ichael Bast (14); 2. Alan Christ ian (13); 3.
