was ridden three times. Had it not . rai ned , many of the secti ons probably wo u ld have offered excellent traction . However, many riders were slip ping just walking th e sections. Every da b became an adv enture in itself. In th e Championsh ip class Bill Sparks added hi s second third of the weeken d , finish in g 14 points beh in d Kav a n a u g h. Sti tes, Adams, St eve McNeal, Brad Skreen, Dan Su ffin, Hilbu n, and Kip Webb rounded out the top 10. Mark Webst er tied for the seco nd best support score of the day, a 128. He finished on e point ahead of R on Comm o, Jr. a nd Nils Mautzoros in Sportsman . Mike West also logged a 128 to finish runner-up in H igh Schoo l. Freddie Steele (Fa n) edged Andy Sa um on cleans for th ird . Guy Bodin mad e it three straigh t in Senior action with an II po int victory over Glen McN eal. Bud Mylerberg finished a point beh in d McN eal. Wisconsin's Don Wilcox scored his second win of the series in Su per Sen ior by a IO-p oint margin over Bill Thom pso n wh o edged Art Webster o n an firs t-bes t-sec tio n -score tiebreaker. Both riders had eight th rees and 28 fives. Schreiber, who headed an SWM sweep of the five classes, managed just II cleans in 60 rides. Kava naugh cleaned nine sections. Neither ri der, or an yone else, even managed to th ree section two. The' weekend in Montana proved tha t in trials, like most everythin g else, you can 't please all the people all the time. The majority of riders reall y enjoyed th e Bozeman event, bu t many were grim -lipped or glassyeyed over the Whitefish effort . If America is to develop worl d class . ri ders it needs even ts like Don ner an d Whitefish. However, Donner, by p roviding differe n t, easier secti ons for the support classes the day before th e world round, did not turn off riders. It should be possible, with careful pre-p la n n in g, to accommod a te both ch am pi onsh ip and support riders in a single day. If such an effort isn' t made in the fut ur e though , th e you ng tigers may find a dwindling num ber of organizers, who for the most pa rt come from th e Sen ior/ Su pe r Sen ior su p port ranks, to help them go play in th e rocks. The National series concludes wi th four rounds begi n n ing in late Au gust: Connecticu t (Aug. 28), Massachusetts (Aug. 29), Ne w York (Sep t. 4), a n d T en nessee (Sep t. 6). Schreiber's world schedule will pe rm it him to rid e Connecticu t a nd Massach usetts, givin g him five starts in. the best-five-of-eigh t series. • Results CHAMPIONSHIP : 1.
