The really neat part about all of their help was that the y were all very patient and helpful to everyone. This kind of support should be taken int o consideration by racers when buying a new mo torcycle. Very few other companies offer this type of help to . everyo ne. Most only offer it to just the big-na me Pros. I think I can speak for mo st of the privateer Yamaha riders when I say thank you Yamaha for your support to motocross racing! Allrightareaerved. .4 ON THE FRON·T ' PAGE : Wayne Rainey is the latest successful dirt tracker-tumedroad racer. An interview with him begins on p. 20. Photo by Tom Riles. Club racers, where were you? Nearly 6,000 people tu rned ou t to be thrilled by Ron Pierce's first AMA stadi um road race. At the end of four and a half hours of racing, the cro wd was standing and cheering on hand to wa tch Roberto Pietri and a score of . local riders receive their glory. Those facts alone stand as a br ight testirno- . ney to the riders who pushed to the physical , mental and mechanical limits, and to Ron Pierce for ha ving the vision and drive to bring one of the largest cro wds ever at Mesa Marin to their feet time and time again ·in what ma y ha ve been the finest racing event ever seen in California . When yo u have. less than 40 riders turn in the kind of cro wd-pleasing performance that was demonstrated at Mesa Marin on June 26, you have to realizewhat could ha ve been accomp lished with double or triple that number. Outstanding heats were turn ed in by Roberto Pie tri and Dave Busb y, from Venezuela and Santa Monica rspectively, Paul Birchfield of Bakersfield, Francis Mazur of Newark, Dan Wood of Oildale, Dave Old of New Mexico and Jack Baker of Las Vegas, NV. Notables like Chris Agajanian from Ascot brought his " Porta- Party On Wheels" from Los Angeles with Chris Young and Steve McLaughl in . The after-race victory party was attended by most of the riders and notables. Everyon e attending had a full evening of racing and fun. In short , I sincerely hope those riders who didn 't attend will mak e plans to race and party in the infi eld next time. T here will be anot her stadi um road race in about two mon ths. This j ust may have been th e start of one of the most popular racing events in Cal ifornia to date. Stadium road racing under the ligh ts is here to sta y. Remember th e Superbowl of Motocross! DAVID KNIGHT Public Relations, Pierce Racing Enterprises Bakersfield , CA Honda Vo- Tech outstanding American Honda has developed five-day training schools tha t are designed for instructors teaching motorcycle repair and related classes. They are offered a t Gardena, CA; Portland, OR; Greendale, WI; Moorestown, NJ and Norcross , GA . The class in Ga rdena can be taken for college credit thro ugh California State University at Los Angeles . . After completing the course offered June 21 to 25, I highly recommend it to those teaching motorcycle repair and related subjects: Some vacancies are still open for this summer classes that extend to August 9, the starting date for the last tuition-free course being taught in 1982. My five days at the Honda Vo-Tech school provided me and the others with lots of fresh ideas and new material to incorporate into our fall classes. Our two instructors, Matt Chezum and Danyel Clark, who is also the Educational Assistance Program Specialist. did an outstanding job teaching. If yo u want to enroll, call 213/3278280 Ext. 3075 and ask for Darlene Downing. One th ing for sure is that those of us tha t attended in 1982 are planning on returning in 1983. I can honestl y say that you 'll meet the nicest and the most motivated people at the American Honda schoo!. PAT OWENS Temple City, CA Yamaha support super I would like to take this opportunity to thank Yamaha's Competition Support people that were on hand at th e 15th Annual Mam moth Mountai n motocross races. These people helped ou t with many of the riders' jetting and othe r problems. It was not j ust the Pro riders tha t th ey helped as I saw many Novice and Intermedia te riders getting hel p along with the parts that some needed. They were great! I received much needed help from th ese people. After winning the third div ision 250cc Pro consola tion race, I wen t to the Yamaha Competition Support van to ask som e questions. Immediately they went to work checking my sus pension . air cleaner. tire pr essure an d the overall performance of my motorcycle. T hey were a big help to me in wor king out some of . my problems before th e fi.na!. Near Hesperia, CA, there is a place called Deep Creek. Deep Creek is just south of Hesperia and north of Lake Silverwood in the San Bernardino Mountains. The desert and the mountains mee t at Deep Creek, and th e headwaters of the Mojave River are formed . This area is popular with off-roaders as there is a great deal of water and sand, which makes any form of off-reading, whether it be two -wheel , three-wheeled or fourwheeled, most challenging. Peop le drive from San Diego , three hours away, to this area because it is so n ice. The Ca liforn ia H ighway Patrol has taken a great in terest in the area as law enforcement officials live nea r th is play area. I strenuously object to m y tax dollars (and yo urs) going toward putting up to three CHP vehicles at an off-road center. How many lives were lost, how many accidents could have been prevented, were these same law enforcement vehicles placed on the road where they belonged? I didn't know Governor Brown had created a California Off-Road Patrol! The land belongs to the United States - that's us. The Army Corps of Engineers administers the area, and they have placed the area off-limits to both you and I, even though we own it. Currently, both the Sherriff's Department and the CHP (CORP) are writing tickets for tiespassing. For my tax dollars I would rather see both of those entities keep the burglars out of my house and the rapists off the street and let the Army Corp of Engineers administer what they are supposed to administer. Your letters are needed. They should go to your local Assemblyman stressing: 1. You would like the Deep Creek area reopened. . 2. You object to the CHPs taking time from their proper duties to hassle off-roaders in a site that you and I bought and paid for, a site to which we can do no harm as the Army Corp of Engineers in the late '60s bulldozed the entire area and put up a dam. We cannot hurt the area, yet it is a . fantastic place to use. Is it a coincidence that CHP has taken such a great interest in this area? CHP has also misrepresented accident figures, implying that the vast majority of accidents 'occuring on a road nearby are the result of off-road vehicle enthusiasts. JIM LIVERMORE Victorville, CA P .S. Carbon co py yo ur letters ' to Honorable David Dreier, 112No. 2nd Ave. Covina, CA 91723. He is a congressman who is very interested in the situation.
