Honda rider J on Zahrt went home with the top 250cc Intermedia te honors after outpoi nting Su zuki r ider G reg Winters a n d Yama h a p i lot Randy Morales. Morales ' th ird pl ace was good enough to win hi m th e big p rize of the week end, a bra nd new YZ250 donated by Yamaha to th e top Inter media te rid er on a Yamah a. Honda rider Mike Shoemaker holesh ot the 250cc Pro final with H ansen locked to his rear fender an d Johnson running third. Hansen swept into th e lead on la p two and Johnson followed a la p la ter. By lap five J oh nson was tigh t on Hansen's tail and the battle was on. Johnson grab bed the lead on th e horseshoe tu rn after the dow n hill and Hansen repassed on th e corner by th e mechanics' area. With the duel being fou ght up front many specta tors missed the drive Bailey put on to move into th ird or th e tight race Reid a nd Tarantino (H on ) were ha ving over four th place. After the halfwa y point the action really heated up as Johnson a n d Hansen exchanged th e lead nearly every lap. Johnson repassed Hansen wi th on e lap to go and the cro wd went wild. Hansen tried a last di tch pass attempt a t th e finish line bu t J ohnson h eld on to win . " H a nsen always cha rges!" sa id J oh nson, " but I fin all y go t smart a n d changed m y li ne where he was always passing me by the mechanics' area. " Bail ey cruised in for a co m fortable third place bu t Tara ntino edged Reid a t the finish line by the wid th of his fro nt knobbies.
