Andre Vromans (Suz) kept the pressure on Lackey by finishing second overall with a 2-2 day. Third went to David Thorpe (Kaw) with a win in the first mota. followed by a third in the second mota. Gary Semics (Han) logged 9-6 finishes. Lackey now leads Vromans in the point standings, 186 to 175. Third is Neil Hudson (Yam) with 140 points. England. assured themselves of starting positions in the next round of qualifying for the World Individual Speedway Championship. Defend.ing World Champ 8ruce Penhall. Dennis Sigalos and Kelly Moran all have slots. while Shawn Moran bested Englishmen Les a.nd Peter Collins in a run-off for the reserve slot. Dave Jessup won the event with 13 points. followed by fellow Briton Kenny Carter with 12 and Penhall with 11. Penhall was the center of controversy at the event after he met his three fellow Americans in event 19. Coming into the heat Penhall had 11 points and could have taken the overall. but he rode around in last and allowed Sigalos to take the win ahead of Kelly and Shawn Moran. Sigalos and Kelly Moran both wound up with scores of eight. while Shawn had seven points. The next round is the Inter-Continental Final at Vojens. Denmark. on July 23. The top 11 finishers from that event will qualify for the Aug. 28 World Final at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The U.S. team was comprised of the event's top scorer Penhall, the Moran brothers, and Sigalos. Eliminated was the 1980 championship team, the British. Suzuki's Eric Geboers won both motos of the July 4 French 125cc MX GP. Second went to Harry Everts (Suz) with a 3-3 day. while Corrado Maddii (Gil) finished third overall with a 5-2. Geboers stretched his point lead over Marc Velkeneers (Yam). who DNF both motos. Geboers now leads Velkeneers. 164 to 130. Honda 's Freddie Spencer celebrated America's birthday by winning the July 4 Belgian GP at Spa. Riding the Honda 500cc V-3 two-stroke, Spencer scored his first-ever GP win. Joining him on the winner's rostrum were runner-up Barry Sheene (Ya m ) and third place finisher Franco Uncini (Suz), Kenny Roberts (Ya m ) finished fourth with Randy Mamola (Suz ) fifth. Uncini leads the point standings with 73 points, followed by Roberts with 68, Sheene 58 and Spencer 37. Anton Mang J ~aw ) ,won the 250~c GP, while Ri'cMPlrSdllaCiiter DNF. Yamaha 's Danny LaPorte scored yet another American victory by winning both motos of the Dutch 250cc MX . GP on July 4. Georges Jobe (Suz) was second overall with 2-2 moto finishes. Third overall went to Henk van Mierlo (Suz) with a 3-4 score. Mike Guerra (Hus) finished fifth overall with a 7-5. LaPorte now leads J obe in ' the point standings, 146 to 140. Kees van der Ven is a close third with 134 points. Terry Kizer (Kaw) defeated Jon Baugh' (Kaw) in the final round to take the Funny Bike win at the NHRA's Molson Grandnationals drag race at Montreal, Canada. Kizer, running a smaller displacement supercharged motor on nitro. lowered the class elapsed time record by nearly three-tenths of a second to 7.49 during qualifying. Kizer also made afaster-then-record 185.12 mph pass, but was unable to back it up. Vince Santangelo (Kaw) also exceeded the record at 187.89 mph, but was likewise unable to back it up. Temperatures that soared to well over 100 degrees didn't slow Gary Waddell much as he won both 500 . and Open Expert at the AMA National Championship Amateur and Semipro Hilldimb July 3-4 at Omaha, NE. He rode a pair of Yamahas, a 500 and an 1100, and set the fast Expert time at 5.50 seconds. Kevin Tilson (Yam) took 650cc Expert, David Mabe (Yam) was the 500cc Novice winner, Kevin Newman (Tri) headed the 650cc Novice class, and Bill Toman (Tri) was the Open Novice victor. HosPITal STOP: Winston Pro Ser- ies racer Billy Scott received a thrashing in a practice crash at the Indy Mile, suffering a broken shoulder, collarbone. rib, elbow and a collapsed lung. HosPITal STOP: Enduro rider Mike Cram, seriously injured at the June 13 Tenderfoot Enduro, is in critical condition at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital. Cram broke both legs, all of his ribs on one side, suffered a blood clot in the lung, and bruised his brain. He has undergone surgery twice, and is in need of blood donations. The competition involves two categories. Agajanian continues to undergo tests for a thudar undiagnosed stomach ailment. and was hospitalized last week. although he's likely to be out of the hospital by the time this is published. The Federation Intemationale Motocycliste Board of Directors met June 20 in Geneva, Switzerland to review a request by the jury of the May 9 French RRGP at Nogaro to impose sanctions and fines against the riders who boycotted the event. The Board of Directors rejected those sanctions, although 125cc World Champion Angel Nieto was fined for foul language. Furthermore, warnings were issued to the French federation, the clerk of the course and to the jury president. The Board of Directors agreed with the boycotting riders that Nogaro and its installations were far below World Championship standards. The SCORE/Bridgestone OffRoad World Championship is on tap for the Aug. 7-8 weekend at \ Riverside International Raceway. Five bike classes will run on Saturday. Aug. 7, with entrants qualifying to run the event by having entered two or more SCORE desert races from last year's Baja 1000 to the most recent Baja Internacional. In addition to the motorcycle cia.....·there is expected to be some competition involving hold on to your helmet - threeand four-wheel vehicles.
