Near the end of lap four, Pate suddenly seemed to slow as Dillon sped past with Brand to fol low on lap six. Brand closed in for the kill , but ran out of rammo as Dillon held on for the win and overall on his ' Trail West red rocket. Brand was " second ahead of " O kie" Clay Hoenshell (Yam), " Flyin' Bryan " Taylor (Hon), Pate and Wiginton. ,The 250cc Experts banged bars for big bucks as Darren " T h e Spoiler" Rhoten (WR W) hit pay dirt by taking consecutive moto wins. Round one began as Mark "Peaches" Rakestraw. piloted his carter's. Yamaha to the early lead. By the end of lap three of the l O-lapmoto, Rhoten had moved into the lead with his machine-like riding styIe. What used to be a radical win, crash and!or burn rider, Rhoten has now matured into a precision racing man/machine combination as he totally dominated the duration of action. Rakestraw came closest to the machine as he finished second in each round while "Okie" Clay Hoenshell followed in third in both rounds. Open Expert class competition en'ded a fine day of racing as the "Money Man" Rhoten continued his winning ways with a pair of picture perfect efforts. " Gassin ' Glen" Goodier piloted his Trail West Honda to a pair of seconds. Third in each round was the "DOughboy", Kirk Spencer, who maintains his consistency even' while riding at less than 100%. Under very windy conditions, the Rushmore Cycle Club brought another local motocross event to Sturgis Raceway this afternoon, with some 100 compe titors making the trek to the western part of the state of South Dakota. Stork again set out at the head of the ..class, but this time Stork's race was cut short when all of the teeth on his YZ's countershaft sprocket stripped off, leaving Friend to roost off with the moto and overall. Parmely slipped his Suzuki into second ahead of Rice in both the second moto and overall standings, while Walter Mueller and Billings finished 4-5 respectively in. the moto, but their overall positions were the reverse. Friend-came right back out in the 125cc Pro first moto to again dominate, while Ben Norfolk, Stork and Todd Gikling battled for the runnerup position. By moto's end it was Norfolk taking the second place honors behind Friend, with Stork beating Gikling for third and Wade Rice grabbing fifth . Round two saw Norfolk and Friend again battling for the top slot, but this time Friend bailedand proceeded to lunch a tranny, and when he could no longer shift, -Norfolk was-left to run off with the moto and first overall. Todd Gikling nudged Rice for second in the moto and overall, while Stork had a handful of problems just picking up fourth in the moto, third overall. Rice earned the fourth overall money, with fifth going to Shane Ivey. In the Mini division, Jimmy Winchester and Mark Mueller traded moto victories and second places in the A portion, with the overall win going to second moto victor Winchester, as Craig Davis put up a pair of thirds each time for third overall. In the Mini B action it was all Randy Stahla, taking both moto wins and the overall ahead of Shawn Shannon and - Steve Prestjohn. Bob Bailey and Bill Stork ran 1-2 in each of the Senior motos to finish the same in the overalls. As for the Enduro class, Kim Bendigo's consistent second place finishes earned him the overall win ahead of second moto winner Tim Hilton and Jake Haffner. First moto winner Dave Grimm had a grim second moto, suffering a DNF and out of the overalls. Bob Blumenthal and Ed Porter traded moto wins in 250cc B action, with the overall going to Blurnenthall with his second moto third to Porter's first moto fifth. Wayne Mueller slipped into second overall with a 3-2 moto tally. • For the 125cc Bs Todd Chicos went 2-1 Ior the overall ahead of Scott campbell's 4-2 and DeWayne Hokanson's 3-4, while first moto winner Virgil Randall DNF the second round.
