Southern Callforala-Arlzona-Southern NeTada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern NeTada- Southern Callfornla-Ariaona- Western hotline Fathers dwarf sons' minis in CRC's fatherlson teem race. Holleys, Barbacovis best eRC father/son teams By Lee Taylor vALENQA, CA, JUNE 20 - Father's Day loomed bright and dear at Indian Dunes. The' Shadow Glen lay in readiness and, despite the racing afficianados down at Carlsbad for the USGP, a race-hungry tribe had gathered, . anticipating in particular the California Racing Club's father and son team race, a race that had to be seen to be bel ievedl Halfway through the second moto, the sons began preparing their fathers for combat by helping them gear up, going over strategy and pointing out preferred lines around the track. The length of the race - six laps with a change of rider at the end of each lap. " There were' two entries on 125cc machines - Jim and Al Holley, looking sharp in identical grey jerseys, and Bud and Todd Wimeu, equally prepared and raring to go. The rest of the 22 bike field consisted of Minis and their dads. When the gate dropped, Jack Barbacovi led the way, followed closely by Tim Young, Sr., Dale Sassen, father of Rob; Al Holley and Seppo Kotajarvi. Throughout both generations the Holleys and Barbacovis were tooth ' and nail and wheel towheel. While ' dads Al and Jack caught a breather. Jim and Jeff picked up the action, although competing in separate divisions. By the end of the six th lap, fathers were draped over berms, holding up nearby trees and swearing to hang up their leathers for ever. A super dice went down between the teams of Yamaha-mounted Mickey and Lamont Elsberry, the Suzuki entry of Ron and Chris Cole and Yamaha aces Tim and Tim jr. Young. These three were handlebar to, handlebar ~ into the jungle, sand-blasting their way through the desert and thoroug~ly roosting everyone in sight coming out of the berms. When the battle finally came to an end, the Holley team wheeled their Yamaha into the winner's circle fot the 125cc division, forcing Bud and Todd Wimett to second. As for the .Minis, the Barbacoris were 'mastn'- ful, piloting the 80cc Yamaha down victory row. The Youngs fought a good fight for second place, and the Elsberry's cinched third place honors, holding at bay a tired and courageous pack. Results 80 NOV: 1. Selin B18ncherd "'em); 2. Guthery gets first Pro win at Corona FT By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, JUNE 16 Keith Guthery, a rider who has always been in the hunt but never really noticed, caught fire tonight at Corona Raceway and chalked up three wins, including the Open Money half mile. " Guthery got the lead off the line with Darren. Hulbert second, Dan Kane third and Jeff Springman in the fourth slot. He held the lead till the fifth lap when Hulben got ins~arid was able to get by. Springman had moved from fourth to third and was putting on the pressure as the three freight-trained around the Corona oval. On the eighth lap, Guthery found the hole he was looking for and went blowing by. With one lap to go it was all on Hulbert and Springman to see if.they could catch him: Hulbert made one las t effort as they went into tum three but found himself in deep trouble as he was much too hot, and all he got for his trouble was an introduction to the wall. Guthery brought it on home with Springman second and Kane third. Guthery added the Open Amateur/ Expert short track and half mile to his laurels as he went wire to wire in both. The 250cc Money half mile saw Jeff Springman break on top with Bobby Beer second and Darren Hulbert third. Nothing changed for eight laps, but it wasn't for lack of trying as both Beer and Hulbert were practically riding double with Springman. Beer got the shot he needed on the ninth lap and got by Springman to take over the lead with one lap to go. Springman came out of tum four in a last-ditch effort, got too high and' literally got himself a primo back rub on the front straightaway wall. Beer ' , picked up the win with Hulbert second and J .R. LaMont third. The Open Money half mile was a duel between Greg Nelson and Darren Hulbert. Nelson got the holeshot, but it was short-lived as Hulbert had taken over the front spot by the second lap. He was only able to hold it for two as Nelson came right back, reclaimed it and started pulling away. Dan Kane was also able to get by Hulbert and at this point the running order was set with Nelson taking the win, Kane second and Hulbert third. Results SHORT TRACK . MINI NOV : 1. Well , if you were at De.Anza Cycle Park today, you cou ld ha ve had your chance. A $2,000 purse was up for grabs in the 125cc Beginner and Novice classes and also the 250cc Beginner, Novice and Int ermediate divisions. One rider who had the "take-themoney-and-run" attitude was 125cc Novice winner Jimmy Palmer (Yam). At the start of the first rnoto, Palmer jammed into the lead while Larry Benedict (Yam), Cycle World's Brian Griewe (Suz)and Joseph Crouch (Suz) pursued. Within a few laps, Palmer stretched his lead to a comfortable distance while Benedict and Griewe battled over second. By the-third lap, Griewe had taken the second spot away from Benedict.
