Ity - Searchlisht - Sidewinder Road point, so I'm not too sure, but I th in k Tony Megla was in at a stro ng fourth overa ll (thi rd Ope n ). Veteran Bill Saltzma n had moved into fifth and, as they headed out on the second loop , was moving up fast. Before check one on that second loo p, Megla had come up wi th a fla t fron t tire. He centinued to hold on until somewhere between checks two and three when both retaining elips on h is monoshock spring decided to join the old shotgu n shells on the desert floor. Zin go, lots of sh ock bu t no spring! When he came by ch eck five he looked like a two-wh eel version of an East LA low- rider. It slowed but sure didn ' t sto p him and he took fifth overall behind Saltzman, First Novice Jon Gardner p u t o ut a flaw less ride, leading the next No vice at the end of loop one by more than four minutes. H e did even better on the second loop and took the No vice win easily. The goodly bunch of Min is entered never ·saw much of Darren Trippensee, who rea ll y smoked that class. I saw hi m come through check one and he was rig ht up in the middle of som e 500cc Beginners. The other chec ks reported that Trip was flyin' and he easily won the Mini class. Inciden tally, altho ugh he' s ridden many enduro s with h is dad, I think this is h is first desert'race. Also in his first desert race, as a matter of fact, in his firs t race of any kind was Gary Burgess who had a blast and wound up third I75cc Beginner. Big deal, right? Maybe. Especially when you consider that Gary is old enough to be a grandfa ther to several of the kids who finished behind him. By now you 're probably wondering why this race , if it was so great, may not repeated. (You are wondering, aren't you? Good!)There are two reasons. The biggie is tha t the Air Force is seriously considering turning most of this area in to a gunnery ra nge to give the jet jocks who lost their tum at the PAC-MAN machine a chance to strafe jackrabbits on the ru n. If you think that suc ks, ma ybe you should say so. The BLM and the military are the biggest landowners in this country. Wha t's the other rea son , you say? (I' m glad you 're reading the cue cards ) Consider th is. If you went through the effor t that us u ally goes into a successful desert ra ce p lus eliciting the cooperation of the military and had only 80 riders show up; would you do it again? In spite of the poo r showin g, everyone had a good time and all three clubs involved wo u ld like to ex tend deep appreciation to all the people who turned out to help. I wou ld like to say thanks to Shirley Upp who took most of the notes for me wh ile I was out getting lost on th e co urse. Some more thanks to members of the Desert Wheels wh o arranged to ha ve tap beer for sa le out there and to Racecrafters (the folks who always have a plug when yo u don 't) for donating a $25 gift certifica te to first overa ll. • KENNY ROBE RTS DALE SINGLETON 11th ANN UAL FREDDIE SPENCER CHAMPIO SPARK PLUG 200 N JULY 10-11, 1982 LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY MONTERE CA Y, WINSTON PRO SERIES RANDY MAMOLA FORMULA 1 FORMULA 2 SUPERBIKE SIDECAR BATTLEOF THE TWINS VINTAGE MOTOR YCLE PARADE C WES COOLEY SU PE BIKE FINAL ON SATURDAY!!
