The preceding races at Kincaid Park this season were merely warm-ups for this weekend, the p oints races. More than 100 riders from all over the state got together for some of th e hottest competition we've seen here in some time. Pre-race favorite and last year' s state champion in the 250cc Expert class , Scott Davis, didn't surprise anyone by fini shing in th e top spot in both th e 125 and 250cc Expert class es. It was a war in th e 250cc Junior class with Larry Staggs taking his KX to th e for efront for the checkered over Ada m Sabedra, Steve Fischer and Randy Holycross. Holycross took the point from Mr. Ed's green flag but had trouble holding the line, and Sabedra led at the end of one. Staggs closed up and took over second on the next round and go t an outside shot down the bac k stra ight with Sab edra taking it back on the inside. All the while Steve Fischer closed and passed for third. Staggs took over two laps from the end and held a one bike margin for the win in great racing. Aaron Hill was the first o f the full sized 250cc Experts into turn one as they gathered speed with Chandler moving into second as th ey ca me off the first high bank. Franklin, Heying make day interesting at Wilson Canyon MX By M ot o- D epo YERINGTON, NV, J UNE 13 The Wilson Canyon MX track is located right next to the Walker R iver and exemp lifies the contrasts of northe rn Nevada. The river winds through barren mountains leaving a lOO-foot wide green belt lush with vegetation and wildlife. Over many thousands of years, rain water heading for the rive r h as etched o ut small canyons and hills, ta king with it most of the vege tation and soil, leaving only co ncrete-hard adobe hills, sa nd and roc ks. These hills o f course, is whe re th e race track is. This race was the third in a series of eight races run under the auspices of Nevada Sta te MX Championship ; points are awarded per moto , and because of this no one sandbags; the racing is more exciting. In the 250cc Expert class Jeff Cloutier on a Kawasaki had the best ride of the da y by leading both motos to the checkered flag by a large margin. Jeff'sonl y problem was almost "eat in g it " in a turn. Brian Parker, on a Suzuki, rode consistentl y to a 2-2 and second overall. Tony Berlu u i's second moto, last-lap cha rge, with a crash after the finish line, almost took second from Parker, but Berlutti had to settle for third place money and a livened up scoring crew and spectators. If Cloutier had the best ride of th e day, the best racing h ad to be in the Open Experts. Don Franklin (Mai) was victorious for the overall, bu t J ay Hey ing, also on a Maico, wo n the first moto, blocking the constant pressure of Franklin for mos t of the moto. AI McE lroy (Mai) was running with the leaders, but a crash retired h im for the day .. In the second moto, Heying too k the holeshot, but he couldn 't hold Franklin back as he had do ne in the first moto. Once by, Fran klin pulled away and won by a good margin. About the same distance back from Heying was third overall Brian Bu tler (Ya m) and Ricky Del Carlo (Mai ) who was fourth . The 125cc Expert class was dominated by Chuck Beck (Ya m) and he easily won bothmotos for the overall. Ricky Del Carlo (Suz), feeling the effects of riding back-to-back motos, finished second with Shanon H arles (Ya m) third. The Mini Experts were the first to a ttac k the track, a nd Randy Kay (Kaw) a nd David McCombs (Yam) provided Ill~S,t' .9f ,tl;1l; action w,it1.r }(a.yl o ll}ing
