Spectators were gettin g rowdy with anticipation of the Expert clash. The track was a little too slick, causing a brief delay in action . Once underway, the 12-rider main was ready to go . Dodge launched his Triumph into the lead followed by Wo rd, Hendrickson, Charlie Barkm an (Si mpson/ Lectron/Knigh t Frames H o n ) and Fay. Dodge dropped out with apparen t problems. putting Word into th e lead over a second place shoo to u t betwee n Barkman, Camp bell a nd H u rst. At the one-lap flag it was Word wicking his way to th e first-p lace payoff with Fay settling in second and Barkman in third. Hurst eventually worked around Campbell for fourth . Results NOV: 1. J U NE 19 Former N atio n a l #9 4 Gar y Davis (Will amette Beverage T ri ) left his mark at Sun n y Va lley Raceway tonight with spectacu lar riding on th e biggest ma chine on the short track which was hi s sa no 750 Trium p h. An excell ent tu rnout of rider s and beautifu l sou th ern Oregon weather early in th e day surprised ever ybo dy once it go t dark. H eat ra ces had three 250cc q ualifiers with th e top two fro m each to the main. The first heat had Robbie Blagg (Yam ) lead from start to fin ish . Blagg is one fine rider'who go es well on 125s and 250s and is on ly 14 years . of ag e (a 500 is already in th e works). Second h ea t had Bob Ingle (Ya m ). Charlie Mitchell (H arry L ill y Yam ) and Scott Annis (Ron An nis Pocketbook Suz ) arguing over th e first sp o t. Mit chell p u ll ed into th e lea d .and too k a tran sfer as did second p lace Ingle. Davis got off th e line mid-pack in th e Open hea t ra ce. but aft er a war betw een hi mself and AMA Jun ior David Wh iting (D&V Yam ), Davis soon appeared th e leader on h is 750 with Wh.itin g second a nd Brett Howard (H a n) also in a transfer position. Brief rain fell on the Ligh tweigh t Money riders in their heat. At the green light. Clay Light (L OP/ Su per Seer/Bosch Yam ) led the pack of riders on I25-200cc machines. Mitchell was in second followed by Robbie Blagg and David Woolard (Suz). Next la p saw a new leader when riders came by the tower. Mi tchell a nd Blagg were 1-2 with Rod Bixel (Suz) and Woo lard running top four wh ile Ligh t remounted in time to ta ke fifth which was the fin al transfer sp ot. Pro Mon ey. race saw Davis waste little time at launchi ng off the li ne followed by Tim McLana han (Ya m ). Whiting. Bruce Turn bu ll (Kaw) a n d Bob Klum (Han). T h is heat proved to be the most exciting as Davis sli d sideways in complete co ntrol to wi n with Whiting seco nd. After the heats were run 'off, th e track was dragged and wouldn 't you know it? Things were lo oking up, but by sign-up an oth er shower doused things. Huffman led ou t of the 25-ri der gate in the second moto wit h Da vis. Keller and Hise in p ursuit. Keller got by H uff m an to tak e th e lead . wi n and the overa ll. It seems that Davis DNF while H uffman took advantage of . .seco n d spot for second overall. Ba ult once again took th e O pe n win with Hansen second and J ones third. Sm ith motored with the O pe n riders to take another wi n in l2 5cc P ro . (AH Pro classes are treated to Ralph H u ffman 's 200% payback.) . After Kelle r had swooped up th e majority of [h e cash fro m the track, spectators witnessed a Mini Intermediate war that had the exc itement of .the Pro contest bu t not th e ' spe ed. Mike Narkiewicz (Suz) p ut the pack to his me rcy wi th a convi ncing lead over J eff Daily (Ya m of Sp rin gfield) . and Curt Cu n ni n gham (Yam ). Joel Sitts (Suz) settled in to Dail y's vaca nt spot with -Cunningha m in a steady third posi tion , which was as far through the pack that he would ge t as Narkiewicz took the win with Sitts second. Next outing saw Narkiewicz ta ke comp lete co ntrol over h is fellow riders .
