Mlchlltsch back on track at PIR.nlght MX By Brian Barnes PORTLAND, OR, JUNE 17 ' After a couple of weeks away from Portland International Raceway's Thursday night MX Rr~~~IJ}~ .I?x~~~asa~i support ace Tim Michlil5Ch made a strong return by taking both motos of 125and250cc Pro. Another hot summer night, superb track conditions, which have become commonplace at PIR . this year, and a rider turnout some 190 strong, marked race number 11 of this year's high point championship. The first 125cc Pro moto was all Michlitsch's, start to finish. Ric Burkinshaw (Suz) and D 8c S Cycles rider Ted Holt ran 2-3 for a couple of laps until Holt swept by to ·ta ke the runner-up spot. Burkinshaw finished third, Ron Vandehey (D 8c S Cycles Suz) was fourth and another Suzuki pilot, Mike Chase, took the fifth'slot. Moto two saw Kevin White on his new CRI25R rocket off the line to lead the first two laps. Holt then managed to squeeze by both Wliite . and Michlitsch with a great pass to . lead the next five laps. Meanwhile, Michlitseh was trying move after move on Holt to get by to save his overall. When the white flag came out, Michlitsch was again in the lead and took the win with Holt a very close second. White guided his Honda into third, Vandehey was again fourth , and Burkinshaw was fifth. In 250, Michlitsch led every lap of both motos taking easy wins. Gresham Suzuki 's Rick Bozarth and Hillsboro Suzuki's Randy Hubbard finished second and third in both motos. . The O ver The Hill classes in this area are growing by lea ps and bounds. . Once again dark douds 'h ung over the huge facilities of Seat. tle International Raceway. And it" was no surprise that Jeff . Moore (DG/Moore Racing Suz) took the I25cc Pro class tonight at SIR.,It seems that more Pros went to Boise than expected, probably to escape the rain being thrust upon the great Northwest. Jay Looker looked quite good winning the largest of the Pro classes which was the 250s at nine riders. It was once again "Moore madness" in the small field of 125cc Pro riders. Moore got off the line in a hurry, and Todd Paulson (Paulson's Suz) was right there to challenge, waiting for a mistake which didn't happen. In third rode Roland Shaff (S u z) who dealt with Kenny Almquist (Enumclaw Suz) . Second race also was Moore on the move. Shaff got a break in second place with . Almquist laking third over first moto runner-up Paulson. Don Knoblauch (Yam) led from start to finish on his YZ with the Husqvarna of Michael Mohrbacher giving chase in Operi Pro. Knoblauch took the mota win but was riot as fortunate in the second, going DNF, putting ." Mad Mike" into the overall p icture coming out on top as d id Looker in 250cc Pro who went 2-1 for h is overall. Second 250 went to Paulson with a 2-3 tally wh ich rung h im up some cash when p o ints were ta llied. T om Bevaart (Kaw) came out on to p of the 125cc Expert race by a lso go ing 2-1. Larrin Inman (Ka w) won the first mota over Bevaar t and Lonn Inman (Ka w) makin g for a 1-2-3 Kawasaki swee p. . Second m ota -it was also green · machines in the first a n d second spots, but the firs t position was owned this ti m e by Bevaar t with Larrin Inman running second a nd brother Lonn th ird, w hich was the final mota order and the overall as well. Word wins Expert shootout at Sidewinders TT By Clay Light CLACKAMAS, OR, JUNE 18 Harley-Davidson 750-mounted Frank Word III posted another stunning victory on a scorcher of a Friday night at AMA Oregon Sidewinders TT. In front of a near capacity crowd on this 1()() degree day, the winners were Danny Bennett (N-D/Bel-Ray Hon) in Novice, Randy Green (Simpson/Bates/Panther Racing/American Hon) the top Junior and Word who topped the Expert shootout, best in the heats was the fourth of five Novice run-offs. It was a spectacular race between Longview Kawasaki's Gary Trull and Bennett, who has finally gotten the bugs worked out of his Honda. The two swapped spots time and time again with Bennett coming out on top when it counted; both made the transfer. Four was also a good number in the Juniors. Green walked away with the race from the start with Susan Word (Suz), the only female rider at Sidewinders, coming on strong in second, only to DNF in the final turn. Experts ran two heats, with the top four transferring from each. First heat it was a 1-2-3-4 Triumph runaway. Don Dodge (Out Front No. Platesl Lou Kiimish Tri ), Jeff Campbell (Simpson /Out Front/Vern ' s Air Sales/Lou Kinnish Tri) and Tommy "Chainsaw" McCullough (Vern's Air Sales/Out Front/Bel-Ray/Kinnish Tri ) took direct tra nsfers as did Sonny Burres (Adams Cycle Supply Tri). Darrell Hendrickson put his Triumph into the lead in heat two to win. Brad Hurst (Panther/KR W / Wo o d la n d Hon/Tri) was fifth , and like Mickey Fay (Am erica n Hon), would have to contest a semi. The Novice main was a two-row event. Californ ia 's Frank Sanchez ' (Bu ffa lo Number Plates Han ) wa s fastest out of th e star ti n g area wi th Bennett rid ing his rear wheel. The two H o nda riders gave th e specta tors a super battle for th e lead with G eorge McBee (Yam ) running third. Sanchez got to lead once more u ntil being taken out by McBee which gave Benn e t t an easy win wi th second going to Da vid Ca ba llero (Yam). Medford's J eff H a rsh a worked to a third a m id st a ll th e co n fusion. Trull finish ed fourth with fifth going to Mike Lawrence (Lectron Hon ). . Whiting- led at the green light in Junior racing over Barry Pelkey (Simpson C-A) , Don Howard (Yam) ' and Green. ' Whiting was riding his best so far this season and had Green on his tailfor two laps until buckling under pressure.
