(Right) Toni Gorgot (top) and Danilo Galeazzi were 4-5 . did make it over the hum p had to traverse a rockpile to the next tum, a hard left over rocks the sizeof TV sets. Schreiber had the crowd pumped as he had a one pointer going to the rock face, but he was unable to con quer. the gran ite and took a f ive. There were mostly fives and a few threes (Lejeune ha d one of the threes) until Spaniard Toni Gorgot (Mon ) put in a superb ride for a one. Section three featured more 'stream work combined with sharp tu rn s and hard climbs. Section four, laid out on the side of a sheer cliff, was dubbed "0 1' Rock Face," and claimed its share of points with a near-im possi ble ' climb following a tum at the base. Possibly the most difficu lt section of the trial was number 12, ti tled "Otis Elevator " : Sheer roc k walls , to be negotiated both up and down. The first clean there was, tu rned in by Schreiber on the second loo p. ' An o ther section that turned o u t threes and fives by th e bus hel basket was 17. Laid out in a massive rockpi le, the section call ed for riders to ma ke a hard right, climb hard on top of big boulders, tu m left on top of more big chunks of stone,' before a traver se led to a left and then an offcamber right, still going over those bike trap ping pieces of granite. Lejeune made a deliberate, thoughtful a ttempt that was good for a three on ,his first ride through. The day before, . while he was checking ou t the section, Lejeune was heard to say, " Ca nada was too easy, but th isl The Americans are crazy." T he first loop was where Leje une' did all the damage, turn ing in the day's low score of 33 points. Schreibe r was 13 back at 146, with Gorgo t, John Lamp kin (CCM) and Burgat . all knotted at 147. The next loop was Burgat' s turn to get hot, and he turned in a 137. That moved him into second after Lejeune went 139 and Schreiber lost an additional point over the first loop for a 47. Lejeune continued his hot pace on the final loo p for a 41, and a 113point total. With the win Lejeune tied Schreiber 's 1980 record of six wins in a single season. Burgat's final tour of 45 points assured him of second. He no w has 99 points in the standings, but on ly a slim mathema tical chance of repeating his title. Schreiber had a 42 on the last loop for third. Afterw ards, he said, " I think the trial was a little harder than I expected it to be, but it was a good trial." . .. . . . . , . . -, '" Gorgot turned in a good ride for 144points and fourth overall. Beh ind him, Italian Danilo Galeazzi (SWM) finished fifth with 156. Lampkin, riding the H iro-engined Armstrong CCM, and Thierry Michaud (SWM), the runner-up in Canada , tied at 160 points. Lampkin too k sixth by virtue of more cleans. Eighth went to veteran Yrjo Vesterinen (Bul), just one point in front of American l tal-jet rider Scott Head. Head picked up another two Championship points in his first full season of international competition. " I always want to get those points," said Scott, adding, " It was a hard trial and I feel good finishing in the top 10. Placerville, where I live , is an hour .and half away from here , so I know a lot of the fans and want to do well." Rounding out the top 10 was Fantic rider Jaime Su bira with 182 points. Nation al C ham pion~hip It was no contest in the National class, with Sch reiber nearly 20 points ahead of the rest of the pack after the first loop. By National standards the trial was extremely difficult, with the riders tackling the same sections as the World Championship contenders. Curt Comer (Mon) was Schreiber's closest competitor after the first loo p with 68 points, bu t he DNF and the battle over second developed into a real dogfight. Kavanaugh was several points back of the leaders after the first loop with 77., but pulled h imself up with 65and 70-point tours for a final score of 212. That was a scant one point bett er than the performance of Kipp Webb (Bul), who went 72-68-73 for a 213 total. Fifth and sixt h went to a pair of SWM riders, Bill Sparks and Matt Pritchard, with respective scores of 215 and ~19. Jack Stites propelled a 200cc Fantic to seventh with a 229. Dave Pyle, Steve'McNeal, Stan Bak- _ . . Bernie Schreiber was third in the World class. tops in the National. gaard and Bobby Micket rounded out the top 10. . Unofficiall y the AMA/NATC points standings should find Kavanaugh leading with S tites second and Schreiber third.
