LOOKING BACK
Forty years ago, we pictured on the cover the all-new, 1982 Kawasaki
GPz550, which featured the company's new Uni-Trak suspension system...
We also showed you the hottest bikes from the Paris Motorcycle Show.
Some of the stars were BMW's R 65 and Yamaha's XJ 650 street bikes...
We revisited, through the lens of Mark Kariya's camera, the just-concluded
ISDT from Alba... We tested Ducati's Hailwood Replica... Gary Nixon wrote
a piece for Cycle News about hanging out with one of his heroes, Barry
Sheene, who said he got to hang out with one of his heroes, Nixon.
One of our feature stories 50 years ago was television's ABC Race of
Champions, which pitted the stars of flat track racing against each other in
San Jose, California. The race was billed as a showdown between the half-
milers and the milers. First-year Expert Terry Dorsch took the win and the
$8000 prize money... We were excited that the FIM granted the AMA the
opportunity to host the ISDT in the U.S. for the first time. At the time, the
country that won the World Trophy got to host the ISDT the following year.
