LOOKING BACK
Frank Stacy was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago while
waiting for things to get underway at the 1981 ISDE in Italy. Stacy led the
U.S. Trophy Team to an impressive fourth place; the U.S Silver Vase team
took fifth... Mike Roth, Connie Feist, Jeff Spreeman and Mark Hinkle
were the top racers at the AMA Amateur MX National Championship at
RedBud... Broc Glover topped won the AMA Trans-USA MX round at
Hangtown; Danny Chandler won the 500cc support race.
We featured road racer Bob Bailey on the cover 50 years ago who had
the "honor" of finishing last at the Ontario National and in the National
point standings and was already talking about doing better next year...
We wrote about the ordeal two off-road racers experienced when they
became stranded for 28 hours in the Baja desert, while competing in an
organized motorcycle competition... Heikki Mikkola won the 500cc class
at the Trans-AMA Motocross round in Delta, Ohio... We covered Larry
Pfutzenreuter's win at the Check Chase Hare & Hound in Parker, Arizona.
