COSTA MESA Rounding o u t o ur week o f Speed way we take a lo ok at th e final ni gh t o f action at C osta Mesa. Earlier in th e w eek there was a Match Race b etween Mike Konle and Bill Cody. Konle won and the fans were su re that he was the -fas test of th e two, an d I said that I have seen it go th e other way. Friday ni ght was a rematch and it did go the other way a s Bill won, and n ow they say he is the fa stest. Later that night Bill was to get into th e wall a nd go t o th e h ospital with a b ad ly c u t h and, eliminating h im fr om th e Main even ts . Wh at happened was dumb but never th e less it did in the Scratch Main Even t. T h e re w as a lot of rough riding in a very short time, less than half th e la p to be precise , In tum 1 K onle was put down and in to the wall b y a nudge fro m Ricks Wo ods , As big Mik e go t tohis feet he lo oked up j ust in time to see Woods run into Steve Bast, sending him ove r th e b ars. As Mike ran to the aid o f Steve he stopped a nd gave Woods a shot , and at th e this time several Woods fans c arn e ov er t he wall to ge t Konle , When Wo ods m ad e his move to ge t Mike, fans c ame ove r th e wall to p rotect Mike f rom Woods, as th e ambulances tri ed to ge t to him through all th e flying fists. The Jack R abbits Moto rcycle C lub wh o work th e infield were trying to b re ak it up an d the co ps were try ing to get th e people o u t an d o ff th e track. Wo ods and Konle n eve r did get to finish their end of what was ' a poor sh ow of sportsmanship because this was a three-man event Billy Cody was out due to hi s injury and with Steve Bast not being able to start, th e o ff icial • results were given ou t over the PA system. Bill Cody was give n fo u r th be cause he had qualified fo r the even t, Mike Konle was given third even though he was the first o f the three to cras h and Steve was give n the win over Rick Woods because he was the last to hit the ground. This did n o t meet with the ap proval of t he fans, b u t c onsidering wh at had already h appened it was by fa r th e best d ecision. ~;o. ..,;~. ... : \. ;;::)."'" ... -:r::l:i~.r:~ and open your mind .
