T he Niles Ussery-Dic k V ick Husky was the nex t bi ke in on ly two minutes later, but h aving sta rte d three minu tes before the Honda, they were five be h ind . Then c ame so me h igh numbers : Ge ne Cannady with th e 34th minu te bettered every on e 's tim e, and Micke y Qua de (Hus) and Mit ch Mayes (Hu s] followe d close ly in . As mo re time s cam e in , it bec am e obvious that n o o ne bi ke was goin g to run away with i t. At the halfway poin t, Pun ta Fin al, the te mperature w as ru mored to ran ge as high as I 15 d egre es at mid aftern oon. By fo ur, the riders would be heading o ut of Santa In ez, an d cars, wh ich o ffered a little le ss wo rk, something to dri nk, an d maybe even a little shade, migh t tell the story . S a m Dempsey was firs t out o f Santa Inez aboard t he Dem p sey an d Dem psey 750 Triumph. It took a wh ile for the !mpac t o f the big sled le ading th e c hase to take hold. In credible ! Bu t, Mickey Qu ad e was only two minu tes be h ind, and his act ual elapsed time put him 15 minu tes ahead . Still , th at Triump h was o u t th er e th ro wing d ust at every o ne . Co mi ng in no mo re th an ten min u tes behind them wer e the Silve rt horn -Fetty Honda, t he Ussery-Vic k Hus ky, th e Mayes-Tibbl in Husky, an d am azingly the O len Mumm a-Eddie Foland 125 Hu sky. The bikes were still running a tigh t p ack. Ch ec kp o in t Four had originally been pl anned as Ranch o Ch ap ala , but was eliminated lat e o n in th e planning. Ch ec k Fou r was over th e moun tain s at Pun ta F inal. Pun ta Final was describ ed in vari ou s wa ys, b ut th e m ost c o mmo n was 'he ll h ole.' It was a fors ak en, deadly h ot , dust bin , far eno ugh fro m the co u rse to ge t lost and confusing eno ugh in its entrances and exits to create a few n ear head -on high -sp eed co llisio ns. Heard tell that so me politicing fro m a certain well-to-d o lady down Santa In ez way got it the re. Too b ad , th ere didn' t seem to be any o ne else wh o even rem o tely app ro ved. _ T h e first veh icle was d ue in to Pu nta Final aro un d six. Riders pace d b ac k an d forth in the ir leathers in the 100 p lus degree heat mumblin g ab o u t their co-ride rs. Eye s dodged up to the to p of the alluvial plain every few sec o nds, straining to see th e first sign of dust d escendin g to the shore line. A round 5:30 a b illo wing cloud came rap id ly down the hill. A b ig cloud , an d it h ad to be a car. Everyone was on their feet. Bu t it was an anticlimax - a Fo rd Eco noline cam e hurt ling in to the pits, very fast. He wasn 't an entra nt, but maybe h e should h ave be en .
