Brad had moved from about 20th to about eighth when he go t sideways in one of the co mers at the end of a fast straigh t and the sam e Russian rider centerpunched him. He went down hard and his bike lo oked like it afterwards. Brad recovered sufficiently to motor around to finish the second moto but was out of the points·paying top ten. Meanwhile, the two Belgians, Jacques and Roger, had run aw ay from the rest of the pack. First one, then the other would take the lead , only to be re-passed on the next lap. This action went on for 30 minutes on the cobby circuit with nei th er having a clear advantage or giving ground. Then, 10 mi n u tes from the end, Van Veithoven seeme d to back off rather than risk crashing , losing the im portant world ch ampionship p o in ts an d the overall win, which was within his gras p . By the end of those 10 min u tes, R oger h ad pulled out a 19 second lead . Christ er Hammargren was a fairly di st an t third in th is on e. DeCoster was see n flexing his left h and to work ou t a cramp as h e h eld the throttle to the sto p wi th h is right. He is the class rider of th e 500 GP 's. DeC ost er (Suz) is now ranked fifth in world championship stand ings b ut it should be kept in mind that he h as won every mota he has finis hed in Gran d Pri x competition. In fact, he has faile d to win only one mo to he's finished this year. He fin ished second but won overall. One important side aspect of this GP was the formation of Grand Prix Motocross Riders' Association, mainly as' a result of the Austrian debacle where the promoter refused t o cancel after a snowstorm and only 17 riders sta rted. Most o f th e top-ranked Wes tern riders walked out but the FIM is, ap p aren tly, going to count the Austrian GP toward the Wo rld Ch am p io n sh ip .
