But th ere was this o ne tall rider wh o stood o ut lik e a so re thumb ; he w as still w e arin g hi s bl ack mud covered Barbours, narrow goggles with sid e shi elds and cu ts . Hi s face was still di r ty an d hi s eyes were red. He looked as if h e would fall over a t an y second, but someone h ad - him by th e arm. T hey wan ted him close ; an hour later he was d ecl ar ed G ran d Champion. D r. J o h n Cl ark (H us) fro m Midland, Mich igan, beat o ut Terry Maie r (Hus) of G ratiot, Wisconsin, firs t place m an in th e O p en class, and second place Alan Math wi g ( H us) of Blo omin gton , Min neso t a, wi nner of a sil ve r medal at the Po t o si qualifier. Dr. Cl ar k rode 154.8 miles, n o t co u n tin g the six mi les , ba ck, made 38 righ thand tu rns , ,41 lefthand turns, fou r speed ch an ges, 18 time chec ks and five observation checks . There were tw o wooded sections before the second check a nd a hell h o le section called "T h e Homes tead " which cu t the dayligh ts out of th e riders. It was little wo nder that only ten percent saw the en d. The Pe n to n team was listed but on ly Tom sho wed an d finished third in the "A" 15 0 class in front of fourth place m an Rich DeG raw ( Ric), a nother silve r med al ist from Potosi and a th ird at the Ft. H o od IS DT qualifier. Tom an d o t h e r s app eared to be enjoying th emsel ve s riding down th e m ain s treet o f one-p u mp R ose Lawn, Indian a, at 24 MPH whil e th e sp eed limit was 3 5 a n d up. Th ey/we w ere very thankfu l fo r th e p atien ce of th e S un day-Go-To-Mee ting folks tryin g to ge t fro m point " A" to point uB" with out running o ve r so me of th e co mp e ti t o rs. Tom Penton still h ad th at smile when I saw him in the rough stu ff , later in th e d ay . I w as somewhat surprised not to see Indian a's finest enduro m en , Bu ck Walsw orth and T ed No vicki. Chec kpoint six , wh ere I hung o u t, had sa nd dunes on one side and b ush o n t he other side , so th ick it could o n ly be term ed "crawl space." So it was wi th so me re a s on th a t m an y riders co m mented afterwards, in e ffe c t , th at the ru n was too tough . Chuc k an d Barbara Harrell of Home wo od, JlIinois, have been working checkpoin ts fo r the Burr Oak End u ro for seve n years no w ; th ey told me they ha ve seen worse , bu t o ne rider came roa ring to a - stop at c h ec k p o i n t six, half d azed and screamin g, " Doesn't th is club kno w any thing else b ut ru nning through th e damn bush ?"
