T h is wa s th e first H 'n ' H in th e area. The re is mu ch i nt e re s t i n c r o ss-co u n tr y , point-to -p oint races. Wea the r tu rned op t to be typical Ari zona all the way , ho we ver this was o ne race th at started on ti me , on ly a h al f h our late . T he start was th e usual ru n to th e smoke abo ut a mi le di stan t , b ut the re the sim ilar i ty en ded. At the smoke mark e r, the trail narrowed fro m mi le-wide to me re yards wide as the co urse made a tight le ft tum o nto a new p ower lin e road. Fo r man y th e p ower lin e was a w elc ome sight , with visio ns o f gra de d road all th e way . T his was soon shattered w ith a tig h t , off-camber righ t tu m tha t led into a was h (rive r be d ). T he trail follo wed a cow p ath o f sorts, up river through assorted cac ti, trees and ,b ushe s ove r m o stl y loos e sand , sc a tte red with boulders. A ny vision of a can dy run were n ow en ded. At 3 mil es o u t, a 25 0 Novice, Da rryll Tussin g led the pac k, fo llowed by J on Mill er, J im Halford, R andy Carnea, R ol f T ib b lin a n d Mick Q ua de. After th e fron t ru nners p assed, the rest see me d to co m e in packs accompanied by clouds o f d ust and much co nfusion as so me tried to fall b ac k morc or less in line. Farther up , t he wash led through the on ly watcr th a t thcy would see all day . Up to now the trail was y ar ds wi de, bu t soon it dropped to bi ke -widths in good wash san d a n d gravel. A ft er abou t three miles o f e x tra -n arrow wash, they ca me upon ch ec kp o in t No . I followed in an othe r three miles b y ch ec k poin t No .2. Fro m che ck 2 the trail p ic ked up an ol d j eep trail that I would n ot lik e to try in an o ld Jee p. T he cou rse wa s run a t 1,600-1,800 fee t e le va ti o n m ost o f t he way , but , after c hec k 2 it ran by Sa d d le ba ck Mountain an d Twin Bu tt es (2,3 75-2 ,200 feet el eva tion).
