" '" '" c, ... '" M N N > ::;; '" ;: '" w Z W ..J U >- U runner s until right af te r comi ng through the pits. Th e Red Dots, in an effort to keep th e Ex perts fr om running o ver th e No vices in this Hare S cr ambles, d elay ed t he Novice start half an h our. Per h aps the heat h ad addled their oys ters , as delayin g the star t mean t th at the N ovices wer e still very close to th e pi ts wh en th e Ex perts an d Amateurs cam e through. Mit ch Mayes said they " st arted running in to t he N ovices " right afte r th e pi ts. And he me ant li terall y ru nning in to th em. T he co u r se mad e a huge circle around th e pits and fo r some reas on, th e club cu t five mil es o ff th e co u rse o n th e seco nd loop, b rin ging the Amateurs and Experts even cl oser to the 'No vices. T he course cu t b ack in on the first loop at a 90 degr ee angle and there were still droves of No vices at th at point. Tom Smith kn ocked d own three o f them. Tom Br ooks was rammed by a Novice and knocked down. Mayes was bowled over and landed under his bike , with his and the N ovi c e's bike all o n top of hi m. Every on e of the top riders collided with at least one No vice . Red Dots also ran the race ac ross the acces s road between the pits/camp area and the highway. T h ere w as n o way th ey could h ave go tt en an ambulan ce out with out sto ppin g the race . Hope th at n o o the r club s ever do th at . It is very danger ous. being almost impossible to s to p th e sta mpeding herd once they ge t go ing. Lu ckil y, even wi th all th e Novice-bum ping, th e amb ulance did n o t h ave to m ake a trip during the ra ce. T he n the re were two bottl enecks on \ the co urse. One w as a can yon with traffic directors all owing one bike throu gh a t a time, and one was a pushup hill with wo rn -out N ovi ces allover it. These new de sert rid er s we re so helpless that th ey wer e unabl e to get up and push their bikes ou t of the wa y to let the Experts by . More than a few were knocked down as Experts and Amateurs tried to zig-zag around them at a speed which would allow them to ride the hill Nobody made it without pushing. Red Dots members at the finish line made matters worse. One actually pushed a stalled bike and rider right into a lady who was listening to Larry Bergquist tell her about the Novice wh o . knoc ked him down . Red Dots probably are not going to love th is write-up, but all the racers I interviewed were so , angry that there ' may not even be a Red Dots race next year . On e spectator co mmen ted that the only reason there wasnt a riot at the fini sh lin e was because all the riders were too tired to fight. RESULTS : OVERALL : 1. Tom Bro o ks (DKW) ; 2 .
